Brimming with Talent:
Kennedy Center Festival Applauds Achievements of Theater Students

Several University of New Haven students were recognized during the prestigious Kennedy Center Awards this past week, including Javier Stevens, who reached the semi-finals of the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarsihp Awards. Stevens was one of 30 students chosen from a group of 200. His scene partner was Amaya Needleman. Also recognized, this time with a citation, were Jeremy Tortora and Nicholas Theodoseau, who paired up to design a student poster, and Keri Comeroski. Top tributes also were paid to Emily Gorecki and Jessica Emerson, who won the Barbizon Scenic Design Award for the University production, “Two Rooms.” The award is given to only one scenic design in each of the regions throughout the country. They won an expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. in April to represent Region I – New England. Congratulations to the award-winning Theater Program for starting off the year so brightly!

On Valentine’s Day For Breast Cancer Awareness

The University of New Haven joins more than 1,000 schools on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14 in hosting the 2009 ‘Pink Zone’ event to support breast cancer awareness. Wear pink! The Women’s Basketball Team plays Franklin Pierce at 2 p.m. that day; the Men’s Team plays at 4 p.m. A full week of events is planned throughout campus and in the community. Sigma Iota Alpha Hosting Play

Penny Wars
The National Society of Black Engineers presents Penny Wars, where members of each class year will be able to gain points – and therefore money – for their class. Tables will be set up in Bartels Hall, the campus center, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 13 for classes to place their coins The team with the most positive points wins a portion of the money for the class.

National Security Topic
Of Lee College Lecture

Confronting national security challenges with out-of-the-box solutions will be the topic of a talk by Ben Riley of the Department of Defense from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the Moulton Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Riley is a former Navy captain decorated by former President George W. Bush for innovative development of science and technology programs for the Department of Defense. He is now the director of the Rapid Reaction Technology Office in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year

The annual canoe-construction project of the the Tagliatela College of Engineering’s Concrete Canoe Club is well underway. The canoe will be 20 feet in length, 30 inches wide at the widest point and will be 5/8 of an inch thick. More important, it will really float. Click here to view photos.
