UNH Football Making News
As football returns to the University, our football alumni continue to make news. University of New Haven alum and former Charger Football coach Tony Sparano has been hired as the next head football coach for the NFL's Miami Dolphins, the team announced at a press conference this past Wednesday. Sparano was head football coach at the University of New Haven from 1994-98, where his teams made a pair of trips to the Division II playoffs, including a runner-up finish in 1997. The New Website is Online and Operational
Redesigning websites demands gargantuan amounts of time, energy and expertise. The new UNH website is now up and running thanks to Sue Pranulis, Ruth Somers-Phillips and Gregory Soltesz in the Marketing Department, Matt Hochberg and Alan MacDougall in Information Technology, and many faculty and staff content managers and graduate students. Check it out, and if you spot something amiss, report it to sitefeedback@newhaven.edu. Click here for website guru and Vice President for Enrollment Management Dennis Nostrand’s note to the campus on the site.
New faces
Ines Reardon has joined the University in the position of Academic Skills Counselor in the Office of Academic Services. She will primarily be helping students from the College of Business develop study and time management skills. Stop by Maxcy 210B to welcome her.
Atomic Force Microscope Now In Use on Campus
Vishnu Kollisetti, left, a graduate student in molecular biology, calibrates the University’s new atomic force microscope this past Thursday. The microscope has the potential for a number of uses, many of which will be explored at UNH. A class on the microscope also will be offered at UNH’s Engineering and Science Summer Institute for Young Women.
Campus Marks National Engineering Week
Kicking off National Engineering Week at the University in February will be several distinguished inventors and entrepreneurs. Alumnus Dr. Richard Deslauriers will discuss his groundbreaking work with medical equipment at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. Ray Leoni, ‘father’ of the legendary Black Hawk helicopter, will lecture on design and innovation from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20. Both talks will take place in Room B120 in the Tagliatela College of Engineering. See Campus Events for information.
Wear Red on Fridays in February
Health Services is asking the campus community to wear red every Friday in February to mark the American Heart Association’s Heart month. On the first Friday, Feb. 1, Wear Red Day is sponsored specifically for women to raise their awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. Health Services also has Red Dress pins that folks can buy for a donation for $5 to benefit the Heart Association. Take care of your heart: Visit Health Services any day for a blood pressure check. Call Paula at ext. 7079 or email her at pcappuccia@newhaven.edu for more information. Visit www.goredforwomen.com for more health information.
Try these new library databases
Available for review through the end of February, these full text databases include Art Full Text, Humanities Full Text, General Science Full Text, Readers' Guide, Mega Edition and Omnifile Full Text Mega Edition. The Omnifile includes the above resources as well as those in the fields of Education, Social Sciences, Business, Applied Science & Technology, Biological & Agricultural Sciences and Legal Periodicals. Access to "Databases on Preview" is found via a link under "Databases" on the Library web page.
Many Hands Make Light Work
Great performances need plenty of support, and a new program at the University, “Working as a High Performance Team” began Jan.15. The Center for Corporate Education and the Department of Human Nutrition worked with an outside company, Learning Dynamics, to combine classroom learning with a team cooking project complete with deadline, budget, meal planning and preparation. Working as a team had its obvious benefits: The team made the lunch, the team ate the lunch.
Reaching Into the Community
President Kaplan and Reggie Mayo, Superintendent of the New Haven Schools, sign an agreement at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 designed to provide advanced educational opportunities for local young people. UNH recently partnered with the New Haven School District to offer college-level courses to its talented and gifted students through the UNH College Before College program, which offers high school juniors and seniors with a B+ average in each of their high school courses and a minimum score of 1100 (math and reading scores only) on their SAT test the opportunity to enroll in one UNH course per semester at no charge.
