Marking Residence Hall’s Progress

Chris, a linebacker for the UNH Football Club, is standing where a ceremony marking the placement of the residence hall’s last structural beam will take place Thursday, Sept. 25. Mark your calendars, Blackberries and computerized datebooks for the morning of Sept. 25. From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 25, the entire campus community is invited to sign the residence hall’s last structural beam. At 11 a.m. that day, President Kaplan, Board of Governors chair Samuel S. Bergami Jr. and local dignitaries will mark the day.

UNH TodayAppellate Court Brings
Criminal Trial to Campus

The Connecticut Appellate Court will be on campus to try two actual criminal cases starting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24. The cases will last about one hour each, with discussion sessions for the audience conducted by attorneys while the judges are in “chambers” after each case is heard. Share Secrets Oct. 2

Rosa Gatti, the highest-ranking woman at ESPN, the nation’s premier sports network, is the University’s 2008 Autumn Bartels Fellow. Gatti built the ESPN brand to what it is today, and she will share the secret of her success at the Bartels Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 in Dodds Theatre. All are invited. University of New Haven senior women's soccer player Selina Moylan has been called up by the Republic of Ireland National Team to play against the United States in Giants Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17.

In a Sept. 9 story about UNH’s upcoming football season, NCAA News on ncaa.org reported on UNH’s new blue and yellow field. “New Haven officials placed a Charger logo on the stadium’s new blue and yellow turf Sept. 8 in preparation for the return of football in 2009,” the article reported.

CJ Professor Discusses Stalking
The lecture “Types, Frequency, and Effectiveness of Responses to Unwanted Pursuit and Stalking” will be presented by Dr. Leila B. Dutton, associate professor of Criminal Justice at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16 in the upper level of the Marvin K. Peterson Library. Russian Film Highlights War and Peace
The Russian Film Series presents a film about war and peace in the Caucasus. “Prisoner of the Mountains” (1996) to run at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19, Room 108, Kaplan Hall.  Two of Russia’s best-known screen actors play Russian soldiers abducted by a Chechen clansman in revenge for the capture of his son. Filmed in the mountains of southern Russia, this film exposes the human tragedy of war.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, President Kaplan, USGA President Louis Eswood III, an honor guard of Allingtown firefighters, members of the University Police Department, faculty and students joined in a Remembrance Walk that started at New Hall Patio and ended in Maxcy Quad. A ceremony paid tribute to those lost in the tragedy. American flags were handed out throughout campus, and a display of small flags remains as a makeshift memorial in the Maxcy Quad.

Niles Named NE-10 Player of the Week;
Rosner Receives Setter of the Week Honors

University of New Haven women's volleyball player Rhe-Ann Niles has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, while teammate Yael Rosner was named the NE-10 Setter of the Week for the week ending Sept. 7.

West Haven Happenings
Numerous events are planned for downtown West Haven in the next several weeks. Here are just a few:
Apple Festival, Oct. 3, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Oct. 5, noon to 5 p.m., West Haven Green. rain or shine. The fifth annual festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church, celebrates with arts and crafts, food and entertainment. Other activities include an apple pie bake-off, an auction, a pumpkin-decorating contest, bake and book sales, carousel rides and hayrides.

Breast Cancer Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., West Haven Green. Rain or shine. Part of the city’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of America’s leading causes of cancer death among women and men, the ceremony is presented by the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Committee.
