Students Travel to China For a Summer Learning Experience
UNH undergraduates traveled to China this summer to visit 10 corporations – including Pfizer Shanghai and the Guangzhou Pepsi Bottling plant – and meet with marketing executives from each. The students received credit for two College of Business courses in the process. Led by Marketing Professor Ben Judd and Practitioner in Residence Chien Wen Yu, the nine students attended morning lectures and were required to write a final paper that related a topic of their choosing to what they had learned from their experiences. During the two-week excursion, the students also visited the Zhejiang Police College, where they gave a donation to assist the victims of the recent Chinese earthquake. Student participants included Richard Albano, Business; Thomas Briggs, Marketing; Yijun Ge, Dietetics / Nutrition; Allison Pittman, Psychology; Erick Russell, Criminal Justice; Cristian Sanchez, Business; Ashish Upadhyaya, Marketing; Shun Yu, Finance; and Western Zickefoose, Chemistry.

Alumni Weekend - A Huge Success
Friendships were renewed, new connections were made and an enthusiasm for the University was apparent during the Second Annual Alumni Weekend held June 6 through June 9. More than 600 alumni, family and friends enjoyed four days of events that began with the celebration of the University’s E.M.B.A. Program and football reunion on Friday night and concluded Monday with the 18th Annual Charger Classic. Warm temperatures brought out families and friends to Saturday’s barbecue, where fireworks awed the crowd, and kids both big and small played on the Kayo Field.

Student-Athletes: No Strangers to Service
The 2007-08 school year shattered the athletic department’s community service goal of 1,500 hours when 17 varsity teams completed a total of 2,071 hours of service. This past year almost doubled the 2006-07 total of 1,132 hours, proving that the ‘service’ attribute of NCAA Division II is well understood at UNH. Students volunteered at a variety of locations, from the New Haven YMCA to the Guilford and Branford Youth Soccer program, and hope to log even more hours next year.

UNH, Community College
Sign Innovative Agreement

President Kaplan and Gateway Community College President Dr. Dorsey L. Kendrick signed an agreement June 12 that will help to make UNH the preferred institution for Gateway students seeking to transfer to a four-year institution. The agreement included academic grants of up to $12,000 for academically strong students. It also guaranteed admission to UNH for Gateway students who fill certain requirements. “This is the first comprehensive institution-to-institution articulation agreement we have entered into with a community college,” said Art Goon, dean of the University College at UNH. “We plan to develop similar agreements with other Connecticut community colleges.”
