The Marvin K. Peterson Library

The Friends of the Library is an association of library patrons and enthusiasts who are committed to promoting the Marvin K. Peterson Library to support students and faculty in all of their academic endeavors.  The Friends of the Library sponsors a variety of lectures and cultural programs in order to enhance the library’s collections and facilities.

Why does the library need friends?

The Library’s mission is to provide the UNH community with state-of-the-art informational, research, instructional and other materials, services and facilities.  Librarians work with students individually to use the tools required to search for information.  The University library staff open doors to undergraduate and graduate student alike, teaching them basic research skills, training them to use computer software and helping them understand the primary tool of academic success: how to research and access ideas and knowledge.

Knowledge and information are expanding at ever-faster rates.  In order for a university library to keep pace with the needs of its students and faculty it must keep abreast of changing academic needs in an increasingly global community.  The library helps its users connect with that global community in a way that prepares them for competing successfully.

External peer evaluators of the UNH library consistently commend the library for wise and careful use of its own resources, and they encourage the library to continue to build and grow to be even more responsive to student needs.  As the University of New Haven becomes more competitive and attracts a new generation of sophisticated students, the library must continue to grow in order to be viewed as a significant asset to the University’s learning community.

The Friends of the Library channels their love of learning into their support for the Marvin K. Peterson Library.

“Libraries keep the records on behalf of all humanity: the unique and the absurd, the wise and [the] fragments of stupidity.” –Vartan Gregorian

If it’s good for the library, it’s good for UNH

Why join?

If the university is considered the marketplace for ideas, the library is the central bazaar.  Membership in the Friends of the Library entitles you to a passport to a territory of new ideas, new friends and new ways of looking at the world.  It’s your ticket to a journey of life long learning.

In addition to authors’ lectures and talks by UNH faculty who have recently published books on a variety of topics, the Friends organizes other events and activities that focus on literacy and the library.  The UNH library will improve its position as the intellectual forum for the entire university community, keeping everyone passionately engaged in the process of lifelong learning.

“What is more important in a library than anything else—that everything else—is the fact that it exists.”  -Archibald Macleish
