Q: How do I know if my son or daughter is eligible to participate in Room Selection?
A: To be involved in room selection a $250 deposit needed to be made at the Bursar’s Office by the February 24 deadline. In addition, your son/daughter’s account needed to be cleared by March 3rd with the Bursar’s office. Your student then should have received a Room Selection lottery number, which was assigned on a credit basis. Students then need to register for housing by completing the online application located at http://housing.newhaven.edu/ApplyOnline Your student will then complete the online Room Selection process (see our website for more information on the process from here on out).
Q: Is there housing available for commuter students and fifth-year seniors?
A: Commuter students and fifth-year seniors who met the given deposit deadlines, do not have an outstanding account balance, and filled out an application in our office are able to join groups and fully participate in Room Selection for 2009-2010.
Q: What if my son or daughter missed the deadline?
A: If your son or daughter missed the deposit deadline but would like to live on campus, we suggest submitting the deposit as soon as possible, and bringing a receipt to our office. They will then complete a late applicant form. The applicant will then be placed on a waiting list, and the student will be notified if they can be accommodated on campus over the summer. Unfortunately, late applicants cannot be chosen as part of a group during the regular Room Selection process.
Q: What if my son or daughter does not have a full group of roommates he or she wishes to live with?
A: The Office of Residential Life holds several Roommate Round-Up mixers before the end of the process. Students who are looking for roommates can attend these and meet others who are also looking for roommates. Students can also submit a profile (available on our website) to be placed in our Roommate Binder. Students who are looking for roommates can then browse those profiles in our office at their leisure and contact any students they may wish to have join their group. Because, for example, a full four-person group is needed to select a four-person apartment, there are many students who may be looking for roommates to join their groups. Alternatively, a student may choose to enter as a “single” and will be placed where we have openings during Phase 7 of the process.
Q: What about the Wintergreen?
A: Students who lived at the Wintergreen Apartments in 2008-2009 but wish to return to campus for the 2009-2010 year, may participate in Room Selection just as campus residential students do. Those who wish to return or move to the Wintergreen in 2009-2010 will need to contact the Wintergreen and make arrangements for a lease on their own. More information can be found on their website, www.wintergreenofwestville.com.
Q: Where can I get additional information regarding Room Selection?
A: Additional information is available on the University of New Haven website. To access this, follow a link on the pull-down menu of the main page to Residential Life. On the left menu, there is a link for “Room Selection 2009-2010.” In this section of the website, you will be able to find all the documents related to room selection, including a tutorial to the online system and layouts for apartments in all of the buildings. As always, our office is available to answer any questions you might have, but we encourage you to explore our website, as it includes extensive information. Please encourage your students to check their University email, as any important updates regarding Room Selection will be sent to them at that address.
