Leadership Positions in the Office of Residential Life


Resident Assistant

The Office of Residential Life employs undergraduate students who serve as student leaders in the resident halls.  Resident Assistants work with residents to create a healthy living and learning environment through educational programming, policy enforcement, and social interactions.  Currently, there are 45 Resident Assistants employed by the Office of Residential Life.

There are three steps in the application process:

  • Filling out the RA application which includes general information, related experience, extracurricular activities, relative leadership experience and academic success. Candidates must also submit two letters of reference (these letters cannot be from present Residential Life staff members).
  • Attend the Group Process. 
  • Submit recommendation letters
  • Interview with the Assistant Director of Residential Life or the Director of Residential Life and representatives from the Resident Director Staff. At this interview, you will also present a portfolio which you have created to highlight your talents (can include photography, past awards, writing samples, etc). The Resident Assistant position requires great organizational and people skills, leadership, strong ethics, accountability and creativity.  As a Resident Assistant, you are part of a tremendous staff dedicated to the residential students of the UNH community.

Resident Director 

Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Life and the Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Resident Director is responsible for the administration of a residence hall and a Resident Assistant staff.  Click here for a job description.

The Resident Director supervises, provides direction to, counsels and supports a staff of undergraduate Resident Assistants, residents, Hall Council members and any programs and activities of the hall.

The Resident Director contributes positively toward the maintenance and enhancement of the residence hall's physical facilities, in addition to fostering a community atmosphere with all residents.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Night and weekend on-call duty for the residence halls
  • Office hours as scheduled
  • Enforcement of rules and regulations
  • Attendance at staff meetings, in-service times and training sessions

Applicants should have previous residence hall experience, excellent interpersonal skills and administrative abilities. Click here for an application.

Academic Peer Mentors

Academic Peer Mentors serve as an academic support system for students as they face new challenges and concerns during their first year of college.  Peer Mentors are trained to point first year students to faculty and other academic support professionals on campus, as well as help in the development of important study skills such as time management, reading and note taking.
