Scholarships/Grants


NABA Greater Hartford Chapter - Annual Essay Scholarship Contest
It is with great pleasure that the Greater Hartford Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc., announces its 2nd Annual NABA Scholarship Essay Contest.
Scholarships up to $1,000 will be awarded to qualifying students selected by the Greater Hartford Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants' Scholarship Committee.  Qualifying students are those that are majoring in business at one of Southern and Western New England's two or four year Colleges and Universities.  These scholarship awards are open to both undergraduate and graduate candidates.  The awarded must be, at the time of the award, a full-time student in good standing.  The recipients of these scholarships will be honored at the 2nd Annual NABA Night of Stars" - A Scholarship and Awards Celebration on April 16, 2009 in the Rogers Auditorium at Aetna; which is located at 151 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT.
Application deadline: March 23, 2009 (Applications postmarked after this deadline will not be considered.) Please contact Wanda Tyler, UNH Director of Intercultural Relations, for a copy of the application.

 



Student Leadership



Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth Institute
The Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth Institute's main purpose is to train the next generation of Latina leaders. The Institute combines leadership training with technical and practical experience in a one-week comprehensive program to be held at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C from June 19-27, 2009.
The Institute focuses on personal and career planning, health and well-being, entrepreneurship and leadership skills. There will be sessions on cross-cultural communications, conflict resolutions, race, class, and gender issues. You will have an opportunity to interact with high-level Latina/o leaders during lectures, group exercises, and site visits. Up to 22 Latina undergraduate college students from diverse geographical areas and ethnic subgroups within the Hispanic community will be selected each year.
Eligibility:
-
Academic program graduating no sooner than December 2009
- Have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours by May 2009
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale
- Be between the ages of 17 and 22
- Demonstrated leadership as indicated by volunteer and other activities
- Have a strong commitment to Latina/o issues.
Cost:  The National Hispana Leadership Institute will cover airline travel, room and board and all classroom materials needed for the program. Students are responsible for covering their own medical and travel insurance and any incidental expenses.

Black Women and the Radical Tradition 2009

The Graduate Center for Worker Education at Brooklyn College will welcome some of the leading activists and scholars to take part in a national conference that will discuss the historical and current accomplishment of black women in the United States.
Black women have been leading the struggle for social transformation dating from the American Revolution to the present struggle for the presidency of the United States. This conference will examine the multifaceted leadership contributions of Black women as presented by leading scholars and social activists.
The Conference will include a tribute to Charlene Mitchell, the first African-American women to run for president of the United States in 1968.

Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

This annual event provides members of the University of New Haven community an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The event includes a performance by actor Jim Lucas in "What Would Martin Do?"  In this program, Lucas answers questions from the audience- as Dr. King himself -about a wide range of historical as well as present-day topics.

The Fourth Annual Gospel Celebration

This event's special guest is six-time Grammy Nominee and gospel artist Vickie Winans.  QU's Praise "2" Him Ensemble will also perform.   This concert is free and open to the public.
