Black History Month Event on the New Haven Green
Date: Saturday, February 21, 2009
Time: 1:45 PM
Location: First Congregational Church, 250 Temple Street, New Haven, 06510
Sponsoring Organization: George Washington University Protestant Campus Ministry Association/International Church at Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C.
From Chaplain J. Siafa Johnson, a former Minister of the Black Church at Yale and the International Church at Yale:
"The event consists of three essential components: Firstly, at 2:00 p.m., the event will begin with a walking tour to the Grove Cemetery and back to the Center Church. The tour is intended to show the relationship between the U.S. Abolitionist Movement and the establishment of Liberia as a haven for freed U.S. slaves and the establishment of Liberia College (1862).
"Secondly, there will be a Protestant Worship Service at 3:00 p.m. to about 4:30 p.m. If students wish to participate in specific during the worship service, let me know; or if there is a choir at your school and they wish to participate, they would be included. Thirdly, at 5:00 p.m., a meeting is planned (most likely Dwight Hall at Yale) to discuss how and what students could do to be a part of an international project to address the impact of the 13 year Liberian Civil War: ethnic rivalry, ethnic cleansing, Muslim-Christian tensions, arms conflict and a failed state.
"This could be an opportunity to enable your students to collaborate with students from other colleges and universities, develop leadership skills as well as connect their academic work to finding solutions to international issues. "
