Scholarships
USA Funds® Access to Education Scholarships®
USA Funds® will award $1500 scholarships to students with economic need through USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships®.
Eligibility:
- Student must be enrolled in full- or half-time undergraduate or full-time graduate- or professional-degree coursework at an accredited college or university. Students must plan to enroll or be enrolled beginning with the Fall 2009 term through February 1, 2010.
- Student must have an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less, as documented on a 2008 federal 1040 income-tax return on which the applicant is claimed as a federal tax exemption.
- Student must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen. Students studying in the US on an F1 visa are not eligible. (Please review the website for more details.)
- Student must not be currently in default on a federal education loan.
Up to 50% of the scholarship awards will be targeted to applicants who are members of an ethnic-minority group* or have a documented physical disability. (*Alaskan Native; American Indian; Asian; Black/African-American; Hispanic or Latino; Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander)
Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted online beginning December 15, 2008 through February 15, 2009.
Selection Criteria:
- Past academic performance and future potential;
- Leadership and participation in school and community activities;
- Work experience;
- Career and educational aspirations and goals;
- Unusual personal or family circumstances.

Conferences
Weill Cornell Medical College Annual Regional Pre-Medical Conference
The goals of this conference are to expose high school and undergraduate college students to the vast opportunities for careers in medicine, while also educating them about health-care issues disproportionately affecting minority populations and the importance of diversity in medicine and health care delivery in general. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

Miscellaneous Announcements
Free Copies of The Black Collegian: The Career & Self-Development Magazine for Students of Color
I still have 12 free copies of the current issue (Fall 2008); they are available in my office for anyone who is interested in having their own copy. I will also keep one or two copies in the Diversity Resource Center for people to borrow on a short-term basis. The Career Services Office also has copies.
This semester's edition includes the following features:
- articles on Sen. Barack Obama and the Presidential race;
- tips on dressing for success;
- go beyond choosing a major....find your passion and your purpose;
- find a job in a tough economy; and
- profiles of the top 100 diversity employers of 2008.
