English Placement Frequently Asked Questions
How does the university determine my initial English course placement?
We determine your placement in the proper English course using a formula based on SAT scores or, in the case of transfer students, SAT scores together with performance in prior college-level English courses taken elsewhere. If you do not have recent, adequate data for us to use, we will ask that you take a brief placement test before you register.
When should I take the English Placement Test, if I need it?
In the unlikely event that you need to take the English Placement Test, you can visit the university prior to registration to take it. Instructions will be provided by the Admissions Office. Otherwise, we will arrange for a test for you during the SOAR program.
What does English placement testing consist of? There are two parts. The Reading part involves multiple-choice vocabulary and comprehension questions about short passages from textbooks actually used in freshman courses at UNH. The Writing part involves your writing an essay of at least 300 words on a general-interest topic, and you will have several such topics to choose from.
Who takes the placement tests? Only those students who do not have recent SAT scores
and do not have English course grades to transfer from another accredited institution that we can use to determine proper placement. We will advise you if an English Placement test is required.
Can I fail the English Placement Test? No, you cannot. Placement is not about passing or failing. The English Placement Test measures your present level of reading and writing skills to make sure that you begin your college career at the appropriate level of English.
