Placement tests are given to First Year Students, and some Transfer Students to ensure they are placed in the appropriate classes for your major, as well as your current level of ability in a given subject area.
All First Year Students will be required to take a Mathematics Placement Test during SOAR. The other placement tests (listed below) are given when necessary depending on the student's major. Please click the individual subject area to read the Frequently Asked Questions for each Placement Test below for more information.
Placement tests in the subject areas of:
- Mathematics
- Required for all First Year Students and for Transfer Students who are not receiving Transfer Credit in Mathematics from an accredited institution.
- Chemistry
- Required for First Year Students pursuing the following majors:
- Chemistry
- Forensic Science
- Engineering (excluding Information Technology)
- Environmental Science
- Biology (all concentrations)
- Biotechnology
- Marine Biology
- Fire Protection Engineering
Please Note: Transfer Students in any of the above majors who received credit for Chemistry 115 are exempt from taking the chemistry placement test.
- English
- Required for First Year Students who do not have recent SAT scores and Transfer Students who are not receiving Transfer Credit in English from an accredited institution.
Please Note: Students who have been accepted for Fall 2009 as a First Year Student coming directly out of high school DO NOT take English Placement Tests. Your placement is based upon your SAT scores at the time of acceptance.

- Music & Sound Recording
- Music Majors may be required to take a Music Theory Placement Test.
