First Year Experience


In their first year, college students face a number of new challenges. The First Year Experience program at UNH is designed to help students make the transition from high school to college.
  • Freshman Experience Freshman Experience Seminar

    In their first year, college students face a number of new academic challenges. The First Year Experience Seminar at UNH is designed to support students as they successfully transition from high school to college. The semester-long class introduces students to  useful strategies for  achieving their academic goals.

  • UNH-First Year Success Center First-Year Success Center

    The First-Year Success Center partners with first-year students by facilitating connections with the multitude of resources available on campus.  The center’s main goal is to  support first-year students in working towards their educational, social, and personal goals. 

  • Living Learning Community Living Learning Communities

    Living Learning Communities offer a unique opportunity to reside with other students who share similar perspectives within a specifically themed community geared towards majors and common interests. Attend events, meet new people, forge life-long friendships and utilize academic support within the Residential Community.

  • First Year Study Abroad First-Year Study Abroad
    In addition to taking part in experiential learning opportunities locally, UNH students have the opportunity to study in different locations around the globe. Our students have traveled to Poland, Spain and Iceland, to name a few popular destinations. The University of New Haven even opened its very own satellite campus in Prato, Italy.
  • Common Read Common Read

    The Common Read Program is designed to foster a common academic experience for first-year students, promoting discussion which engages the campus community.  Programming opportunities range from assignments in first-year courses to campus-wide presentations from authors.  

  • First Year Writing Program First-Year Writing Program

    In the First-Year Writing Program at UNH, students from across the university learn to write deliberately, to use research thoughtfully, and to argue effectively.  Class sizes reflect national recommendations for engaged learning, and English faculty provide well-designed activities that prepare students for a variety of writing contexts.
