Programming

College is a time to explore new ideas, schools of thought and values. It is also a time to explore one's future, educational direction and personal goals. The Office of Residential Life's hope is that the new "Explorations" model will meet both the theoretical and practical needs of our students; while reflecting both the philosophy and goals of the University; as well as the centralized theme of experiential learning.

A residence hall should reflect the Five Principles of Community as outlined in "Campus Life: In Search of Community." A residence hall community should:

  • be a place where faculty and students share goals and initiatives which enhance the learning community on campus.

  • be a place where self-expression is supported, but civility is obligatory.

  • be a place where all individuals are willing to accept their personal responsibilities, as well as their community obligations.

  • be a place where individuals are cared for and supported; and civic responsibility is encouraged.

  • be a place where the traditions and history of the University is celebrated and shared

(The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; Ernest L. Boyer; Princeton, NJ 1990).

The Office of Residential Life supports the principles of community through the programming model, staff support, and programming initiatives. The proposed "Explorations" programming model more fully meets the five principles of community:UNH Explorations Model
