UNH Theatre Production Nominated for Performance at 2008 Kennedy Center Regional Theatre Festival
West Haven, Conn., Dec.11, 2007The University of New Haven (UNH) Theatre Program production of “columbinus” has been nominated for a performance at the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Fitchburg, Mass., Jan. 29 - Feb. 3, 2008. UNH Theatre Program Director Robert Boles says the nomination automatically garners the UNH production consideration for the Kennedy Center National Festival in Washington, D.C., in April, 2008.
The fall production of “columbinus” at UNH, which was the play’s New England premiere, had record numbers in attendance. Boles notes that the powerful play was one of six selected from the entire New England region for a Kennedy Center performance. “To compete in the regional competition is a huge accomplishment in itself,” he says. “The entire ‘columbinus’ cast and crew is ecstatic that that our fledgling program can compete with some of the most established theatre programs in New England, and make the very short list chosen to be presented at the festival.”
Boles and an avid coterie of theatre students began capturing the attention of the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival in Jan. 2007, less than two years since the UNH Theatre Program’s inception. Of the more than 38 colleges and universities at last year’s festival, UNH was singled out for a meritorious achievement award for the “Most Engaging New Program.” In addition, Boles was recently selected as co-vice chair of playwriting for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Region 1 (New England).
