Hoping to help his depressed wife, Philippe tries to obtain a work transfer to a seaside town but is caught trying to scam a postal inspector and is immediately banished to the far north of France. Leaving his child and wife behind, Philippe arrives in a cold place inhabited by hard-drinking, unemployed rednecks speaking an incomprehensible dialect called Ch'ti but soon confronts his own prejudices.
