University of New Haven Hosts Screening of New Beatles Film

The University of New Haven was one of eight colleges across the country – joining institutions such as Berklee College of Music, New York University and the University of Southern California – chosen to host a screening of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years.

The new documentary chronicles the iconic band’s journey to the top of the world that was fueled by their live performances and extraordinary personalities.

A panel discussion following the screening featured Apple Corps CEO Jeff Jones.

“When selecting colleges, we specifically targeted universities with a reputation for having the best music business programs in the country,” said Todd Goodwin, vice president of college and lifestyle marketing for the Universal Music Group.

Universal is collaborating with Hulu and Apple Corps Ltd to sponsor the screenings. “The Beatles’ cultural impact is incomparable, and it is important for any fan of music to understand the band’s history."

From Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, the film draws from more than 100 hours of rare and unseen footage collected from fans, news outlets and national archives as well as the Beatles’ private collection.

Beatles Fans Turned Scholars

Wes Davis, a senior music lecturer and a Beatles scholar, has taught classes at the University of New Haven about the Beatles. “I often tell my students that the artist is trying to give us something we can use in our lives,” he said. “The Beatles reflected ourselves back at us, our relationships and our histories. They revolutionized music, and they changed us.”

One of the students who has taken the Davis’s class was Nathan Ward ’15, ’17 M.S., a longtime fan and a musician who has covered Beatles’ songs.

His band, the Nathan Ward Band, has played at the University’s Beatles Night events, and he said the course and the Beatles continue to inspire him. “They were brilliant, and they pioneered everything you hear today,” Ward said.
