WEST HAVEN, CONN. -- The University of New Haven’s Center for Family Business will sponsor three programs this fall aimed at helping members improve employee relations and communication skills and focus on branding their businesses.
The sessions are open to members of the center, which begins its 20th year this fall, but prospective members are permitted to attend if they contact Paul Sessions, director, at 203-932-7421.
The sessions include:
- Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Grassy Hill Country Club, 441 Clark Lane, Orange. Jack Mitchell will present his latest seminar: “Hug Your People: The Proven Way to Hire, Inspire and Recognize Your Employees to Achieve Remarkable Results.” Mitchell, known for his book, “Hug Your Customer,” a Wall Street Journal bestseller, is chairman of Mitchells/Richards/Marsh and Wilkes Bashford, a three-generation family business that operates Connecticut, New York and California men’s and women’s specialty stores known for their personal service and strong customer relationships. Mitchell’s seminar reveals his formula for hiring, motivating and keeping his biggest asset – employees. He will explain his method of personalizing relationships, encouraging employee success, and creating greater satisfaction at work. Warren Buffett said of Mitchell’s “Hug Your Customer,” “It’s a gem. I wish everyone at Berkshire would follow his advice –we would own the world.”
- Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Grassy Hill Country Club, and on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 8 a.m. at Bigelow Tea, 201 Black Rock Tpke., Fairfield, Conn. Adam Vane, who has trained leaders in the United Nations to negotiate with rebel factions and has worked to mediate disputes between gang members and community leaders in the Bronx, will present “Heroic Conversations: Improving Communication in Your Organization.” Vane’s company, Paragon Global Consulting, helps leaders and teams address team effectiveness, strategic planning, conflict management and leadership capacity. His methods will help business owners reduce friction and increase productivity and communicate more effectively with family members, employees, colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
- Tuesday, Dec. 3, 5:30 p.m. at the Grassy Hill Country Club, and Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 8 a.m., Bigelow Tea. “Is Your Brand in Adolescence?” will be presented by Evelyn Starr. Starr will show you how a brand evolves -- even when the company does nothing. How a target audience perceives the brand may not be what the managers think it will be. This seminar will focus on teaching business owners to define their brand to find new business opportunities, learn how brands evolve and understand what it means when a business is in the “brand adolescence” stage and how to evolve and grow your brand. A marketing consultant with more than 20 years of experience working with Dunkin’ Donuts, Veryfine Products and The First Years, Starr will illustrate her talk with stories from these companies and others.
