WHAT: A display of 1,100 backpacks – each commemorating one of the 1,100 students who commit suicide each year in the United States. Some were contributed by the families of the students. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of college students in the United States.
WHEN: Monday, April 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Bixler/Botwinik Quad at the University of New Haven, 300 Boston Post Road, West Haven, Conn. In the event of rain, the display will be in the Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall, the student center.
WHO: The exhibition, “Send Silence Packing,” was developed by Active Minds, Inc., a national organization that is the leading voice for college student mental health in the United States. The backpacks will visit other Connecticut colleges but UNH is first.
Elizabeth Field, a UNH junior from Villa Park, Calif., and president of the UNH chapter of Active Minds, is available all day on site for an interview.
