88.7 WNHU-FM Named "Best College Radio Station" in Connecticut

West Haven, Conn., May 10, 2011—For the sixth year in a row, the University of New Haven’s campus radio station, 88.7 WNHU-FM, was named the "Best College Radio Station" in Connecticut by the New Haven Advocate.

The station is meant to advance the University's mission by providing experiential learning opportunities. Students majoring in communication, music industry or music and sound recording gain on-air experience, technical instruction, and marketing and promotions training. They also can develop contacts in the music industry.

During the 2010-11 academic year, 14 students hosted weekly shows. Students serve as directors for sales and programming, and as announcers for home football, basketball and baseball games.

Bryan Lane, station general manager, believes his role is to mentor students and help them develop a foundation for successful careers. "The campus radio station is a great educational tool and provides a laboratory for students to learn," says Lane, who teaches in the Communication, Theater and Film Department and has more than 20 years' experience in radio management.

The station, which dates back to 1973, broadcasts to a 30-mile radius around the campus. In addition to students, it is staffed by volunteers from the community.

A leader in experiential education, the University of New Haven provides its students with a valuable combination of solid liberal arts and real-world, hands-on professional training.
