UNH Celebrates Black History Month

West Haven, Conn., February 8, 2010-The University of New Haven (UNH) Black Student Union and Office of Intercultural Relations will sponsor several events in recognition of Black History Month 2010. Def Poetry Jam, Tues., Feb. 9, 2010, 8 p.m., Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall:

Gifted poets Amanda Diva and Malik Yusef will educate, entertain and inspire.

Apollo Night, Fri., Feb. 12, 2010, 7 p.m., Dodd's Theatre:

Come and hear UNH's best talent at this annual event.

Black Student Union Movie Nights:

- Tues., Feb. 16, 2010, 8:30 p.m., Moulton Lounge, Bartels Hall:

The award-winning drama "Precious: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire" will be featured.

- Wed., Feb. 17, 2010, 8:30 p.m., Moulton Lounge, Bartels Hall:

The documentary comedy "Good Hair" staring Chris Rock and Maya Angelou will be featured.

- Wed., Feb. 17, 2010, 8 p.m., Common Lounge, 1st Floor, Botwinik Hall:

The crime drama film "Mississippi Burning" will be featured. There will be a discussion following the movie and a prize giveaway.

- Comedian Showcase, Thurs., Feb. 18., 2010, 8 p.m., Dodd's Theatre:

Come laugh and have a good time at the Black Student Union's annual comedian showcase featuring stand-up comedian Vanessa Fraction.

- Thee Phantom and the Illharmonic Orchestra, Fri., Feb. 19, 2010, 10 p.m., the UNH German Club:

What do you get when you cross classical music with hip hop beats and thought-provoking lyrics?  Come to this event to find out the answer.

- Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration: "How Far Have We Come?" Wed., Feb. 24, 2010, 8:30 p.m., Moulton Lounge, Bartels Hall:

How far has American society come since the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement? Since President Obama's election?  Have we gone far enough or is there still work to be done?  This panel discussion will be a chance for both faculty and students to express their ideas on these questions and more.

- Portraits of Courage and Soul Food Dinner, Thurs., Feb. 25, 2010, 5 p.m., Dodd's Theatre and Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall:

The Black Student Union is hosting their annual Soul Food Dinner and cultural performance.  Details about ticket sales and cost will be advertised at a later date. The play "Portraits of Courage" will be performed prior to dinner being served.This play is an examination of overlooked African-Americans and their contributions to the shaping of American history and culture.
