Celebrate Diversity and Racial Harmony During the 2010 Harmony Classic at UNH

The University of New Haven (UNH), Lincoln University and the Connecticut State Conference of NAACP branches have partnered to present the 2010 Harmony Classic, an event which embraces the NCAA Division II Community Engagement initiative to develop students and communities by actively engaging in shared experiences and the NAACP's mission to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

The Harmony Classic will begin with two lectures at UNH which embody the NCAA Division II community engagement initiative, and culminates in the Chargers' football home opener against Lincoln University, a historically black university from Lincoln, Pennsylvania. Both lectures are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, September 8, at 7 p.m. in Dodds Hall, leadership expert Gary Steele, senior consultant at Learning Dynamics, in Wallingford, Connecticut, will present a public lecture, "History - The Backbone of Opportunity." Steele's professional background includes extensive national and international human-resources experience as a problem solver, project manager and team leader. He has more than 25 years of experience in leadership, management and consulting in the military, education, telecommunications and pharmaceutical industry sectors.

On Thursday, September 9, at 7 p.m. in Dodds Hall, world renowned forensic scientist and UNH professor Dr. Henry C. Lee will present a public lecture, "Equal Justice - Lessons Learned from High Profile Cases." Lee will discuss well-known criminal cases in which he has played a major role, including that of O.J. Simpson and Connecticut's notorious "wood-chipper" murder.

On Saturday, September 11, the UNH student chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) will hold a presentation at the Athletic Complex featuring the 500-mpg vehicle and the concrete canoe designed by UNH engineering students.

On game day, Saturday, September 11, the celebration continues with a variety of activities prior to the Chargers 2010 football home opener at 1 p.m.  Game-day activities include a health fair, a vendor fair, a tailgating competition, a kids' zone and more. Most activities will conclude when the University of New Haven and Lincoln University marching bands lead the crowd from the UNH Athletic Complex parking lots to Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium before the kickoff.
