Body

West Haven, Conn., March 13, 2009-The Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven (UNH) will host an exciting Discovery Day of hands-on activities in the fields of chemistry, civil engineering and computer technology for more than 40 sixth-grade students from the University Engineering and Science Magnet School on March 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

The students will begin by donning 3-D glasses to explore how molecules interact, using 3-D technology, and examine the principles behind optical illusions with chemistry professor Pauline Schwartz. The students will then become among the few to understand the reasons for the large piles of soil around the perimeter of the Q-Bridge, when civil engineering professor Gregory Broderick demonstrates the strength properties of soil. Computer science professor Alice Fisher will give the students lessons in the latest programs from Google Labs, and computer engineering professor Christopher Martinez will offer a hands-on activity demonstrating how digital images are created.

Martinez, who coordinated the University Engineering and Science Magnet School visit, notes, "The Engineering faculty are really excited about helping to develop these young minds and encouraging them to become some of the next generation of scientists and engineers to lead this country." He adds that the next Discovery Day visit by the students will be in May, 2009.
