UNH Marketing Students Team with Area Businesses
to Compete in International Competition
and Raise Awareness of Internet Ad Effectiveness
West Haven, Conn., March 17, 2009--On April 8, 2009, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bartels Hall campus center, University of New Haven (UNH) student teams in the Organizational Marketing class of Subroto Roy Ph.D. will unveil the web advertising business-to-business (B2B) campaigns they have created for area businesses in preparation for the 2009 Google Online Marketing Challenge-the "largest academic competition ever"-known internationally as "Gomcha."
Two weeks into the three-week global challenge, the UNH Gomcha event, know as "B2B Marketing in a Recession with Google AdWords," will feature seven teams of four to six students who will provide a live demo of the Google AdWords system and provide tips on B2B marketing during a recession. Each team receives $200 worth of online advertising from Google AdWords, recruits an area business for which they establish an effective online marketing campaign-from forming a strategy, running the campaign, and assessing results to providing the business with recommendations to further advance their online marketing. Along the way, the teams optimize and refine their campaigns. They must also submit two competition reports -before they begin and after the campaign ends. The key to the teams' success, according to Roy, will be "... defining what key words will steer businesses to their ads on the Internet, and then designing an ad that will produce action."
Area business recruited by Roy's students include ABCO Welding and Gas, headquartered in Waterbury; Advantage Maintenance Inc. in Woodbridge; East Haven Landscape Products in East Haven; Ever Ready Press in Ansonia; Grand Light in New Haven; and Response, LLC in New Haven. Also meeting the challenge is One Flight Up Design & Innovation Inc., in Boonton, New Jersey.
Though the UNH Google Online Marketing Challenge will compose a sizable portion of the final grade for students in Roy's Organizational Marketing (B2B) class, the logistics are being managed by the UNH chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), led by President Derek Humphrey ‘09, Vice President Ashish Upadhyaya ‘09, and Director Kyle Banks '09. Though the UNH teams will be graded on their efforts, the Gomcha Teams will ultimately be judged by a panel of independent academics from all over the world.
