UNH Prof to Share Flair for Flamenco With Art Magnet School Students

Body
West Haven, Conn., March 5, 2009-On Friday, April 3,  from 2 - 3 p.m., internationally acclaimed pianist and University of New Haven Assistant Professor of Music Jose Garcia-Leon will share his love of, and flair for, Flamenco music-from his native Seville, Spain- with students at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School in New Haven.

Following a brief introduction on the historical and cultural background of Spain, Garcia-Leon will concentrate on flamenco dance and music, linking popular Spanish music with classical music and perform brief pieces to showcase well-known Flamenco music such as Granada and Asturias by Albéniz and Firedance by Falla. His performance will be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation offering brief non-technical explanations of what is happening in the music. He will also include visuals including video clips of flamenco dance and singing.

Garcia-Leon is a first-prize winner of numerous national and international competitions, including the Artist International Competition of New York. He has performed extensively as a solo recitalist, most notably at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York, the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, the Saint Petersburg Music Festival, the Soulahti Summer Festival in Finland, the Shandelee Showcase Series in New York, the Marienbad International Festival in the Czech Republic, and also in Ireland, Thailand, Chile, France and throughout Spain.

In addition, he has worked with conductors like Timothy Perry, Florin Totan from the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra and Constantine Orbelian with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra; and has made recordings for national television and radio programs in Spain, the United States and South East Asia. He has participated in Master Classes of renowned pianists such as Sergei Arzumanov, Sara Davis Buechner, Zenon Fishbein, Lev Vlasenko as well as Valery Kastelsky at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and Leonid Brumberg at the Conservatory of Vienna.

After graduating with highest honors from the Conservatorio Superior de Sevilla, Garcia-Leon moved from Seville to New York where he completed a doctorate in Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music.
