We encourage you to use the Course Reserve system to provide convenient access to library or personal materials that you would like set aside for your students. Most reserves are placed on a "Closed" (three-hour) loan period for use in the library. Material may also circulate for Overnight/2-Day/3-Day/5-Day/One Week use. The Course Reserve collection is located behind the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Peterson Library. Please use the Course Reserve Form to place material on reserve. The Course Reserve Form may be downloaded here. They are also available in the Library at the Circulation Desk.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you would like to place items on Course Reserve, you can fill out our Course Reserve Form and bring your items to the Circulation Desk. If the items are in the Peterson Library, you can send the form to us via email or Campus Mail and we will retrieve the items for you and put them on Course Reserve. Feel free to include a syllabus, too, since this can help us clarify citations during processing. It is your responsibility to determine whether the material that you want to place on Course Reserve is available in the library collection before sending any students to the library. (Check the library's online catalog.)
A separate Course Reserve Form must be submitted for each course. These forms are arranged by course number. Please DO NOT place the titles of Course Reserve material for all of your courses on one Course Reserve Form. Use a separate form for each course. If a title is to be placed on Course Reserve for several courses, this title should appear on the Course Reserve Form for each of the courses in which it is to be used.
Please use the Course Reserve Form to place materials on Course Reserve. We will not accept Course Reserve requests by telephone.
Assignments should NOT be made for Course Reserve reading before you have submitted a request to place the material on reserve.
As the faculty member teaching the course, you determine for how long a student in your class may use the material. For each title that you place on Course Reserve, you should indicate that it is one of the following types of reserve:
CLOSED: Use only in the Library for 3 hours. ONLY the faculty member who places a title on a Closed Reserve may remove it from this category or charge it out of the library while it is on Closed Reserve.
OVERNIGHT: To be used in the library until 4:00 p.m. After 4:00 p.m., a title in this category may be charged out until one hour after the library opens the following day (i.e., until 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday; 10:00 a.m. Saturday; 3:00 p.m. Sunday).
2-5 DAY: To be used in the library until 4:00 p.m. After this time, an item in this category may be charged out for 2-5 days (as specified by the instructor). A student will have until the library closes on the Due Date to return the item (i.e., a student charging out a 4-day Course Reserve at 4:00 p.m. Sunday will have until 11:00 p.m. Thursday to return the material).
ONE WEEK: This material circulates for one week. It can be checked out at any time.
The library will assign a CLOSED Reserve status to any title for which no preference is indicated.
We process Course Reserve requests in the order received. If we cannot process them the same day we receive them, we aim to process them within 48 hours. To ensure that Course Reserve material will be ready when needed, we ask that you prepare and forward to the library your reserve list on the proper Course Reserve form before students will need the material. (A two-week lead time, while not mandatory, is a good guideline.)
Once your Course Reserve materials appear under your name in the Course Reserve section of our catalog, then they are ready for students to use.
- What do I do if an item has been charged out of the library and I want to place it on Course Reserve?
Any material requested for Course Reserve that is in Circulation will be recalled, as Course Reserve use takes priority over individual faculty and student use. You may also place the recall yourself.
Please note that the Peterson Library will place only materials owned by the library or the instructor on Course Reserve. We will not place lendable Interlibrary Loan materials (books, AV materials, etc.) on Course Reserve. However, it is permissible to place an article that you have received via Interlibrary Loan on Course Reserve for one semester -- provided that a notice of copyright and complete citation information appears on or is attached to the copy. If you would like to put the same article on Course Reserve after that, you must obtain permission from the copyright holder.
Please submit ILL requests at least three (3) weeks before the date on which the material will receive is first use. This allows us the time necessary to receive and process the material.
Copies of articles to which the library subscribes. The library will stamp a copyright protection notice on the front page of such articles if there is no copyright notice (the symbol "©" or the word "copyright") on the item. The stamped notice shall read as follows: "This material may be protected by copyright law (Title 17, U.S. code)." These articles will be put on Course Reserve for a single term only. Some articles are available in our databases, so you should check "Journals in the MKP Library" to see if students can access some articles this way.
A completed Copyright Compliance Form for Course Reserve Materials is required for each photocopied article to be placed on Course Reserve.
Single copies of articles from journals obtained outside the UNH Library may be put on Course Reserve for a single term only. You must provide a complete citation for such articles (author, article title, journal title, volume, issue or number, date and pagination). The library will stamp a copyright protection notice on the front page.
A completed Copyright Compliance Form for Course Reserve Materials is required for each photocopied article to be placed on Course Reserve.
A copy of a single book chapter, for one term only. The instructor must provide a complete citation for the chapter. The library will stamp a copyright protection notice on the front page. If the Peterson Library owns the book, the library will put the book on Course Reserve in place of a photocopied chapter.
NOTE: Photocopies of any part of a commercially published study guide, answer key, workbook, or solutions manual (all considered "consumable" items) require copyright permission before they are placed on Course Reserve.
Computer disks must be accompanied by a statement signed by the instructor indicating that the instructor accepts responsibility for any copyright violation, damage, or contents.
Software. If you would like to put software on Course Reserve for students to use, you must test to make sure it will work on the library's computers.
Audio-Visual Materials. Legally-purchased, commercial AV materials may be placed on Course Reserve if related to student coursework. Students can view DVDs on library computers, or with a regular DVD player/TV set. The library also has TVs with VCR/DVD components for viewing videocassettes and DVDs.
Websites. You may give us the address for a website, along with a description, and we will put this link into the catalog.
NOTE: Copyright permission must be obtained to place the following on Course Reserve: non-commercial videos/DVDs taped directly from a broadcast transmission; faculty-produced videos/DVDs copied from commercial versions; homemade cassettes/DVDs/MP3s/CDs containing copyrighted material.
Student Projects and Papers, or other student-produced materials. Student course work, such as research papers and projects, may be placed on Course Reserve or Permanent Reserve with the student's permission. A FERPA Release Form signed by the student must be presented along with each item in any format that is to be placed on reserve. The FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) Release Form grants the Library permission to place the student's work on reserve. Students are entitled to remove their work from reserve at any time.
Yes. Circulation staff will place a removable identifying label on the items and clip a blue card with a barcode to it. (Please note that personal items may suffer some wear and tear.) All personal items placed on Course Reserve must adhere to the guidelines established by Copyright Law. For items developed by the instructor (worksheets, notes, quizzes, answer keys, etc.), it is not necessary to gain copyright permission to place items on Course Reserve.
NOTE: Notebooks filled with different articles photocopied by an instructor can be construed as anthologies, and will not be placed on Course Reserve without the express permission of every publisher or other copyright holder represented by each article in the notebook.
Individual articles may be placed on Course Reserve in paper format, in accordance with "Fair Use."
The Peterson Library will place only one copy of an individual article on Course Reserve. Complete citations must be provided for the article (author, title, volume, issue/number, date, and page number range).
You must obtain copyright permission to place multiple copies of an article on Course Reserve. This permission must be stated in writing, and it is the faculty member's responsibility to obtain such permission. Some exceptions:
- many items in our databases -- depending on the publisher
- items in the public domain
- works of the United States Government. (However, this exemption from copyright protection does not necessarily apply to works produced by state, local or foreign governments.)
Please do not submit loose pages to be placed on Course Reserve. Photocopied items should be stapled or clipped. A copyright notice should appear on the front page of each article. A photocopy of the title page can serve this purpose. If no copyright notice is apparent, the words "This material may be protected by copyright law (Title 17, U.S. code)" should be included on the item. Circulation Staff will attach a blue card with a label and a barcode to the Course Reserve item.
The Peterson Library cannot place entire periodical issues or photocopies of entire books on Course Reserve.
At the end of each semester, library staff will return expired Course Reserve forms, personal copies and photocopies to the faculty member or academic department. We will return library books to the stacks. Of course, if you specify an earlier removal date on your Course Reserve form, we can remove the books from Course Reserve at that time.
Because of copyright restrictions and space limitations, the library will not automatically place all items on Course Reserve for the following semester. If you wish to place the same items on Course Reserve for a subsequent semester, you must contact the Circulation Desk and may have to secure a publisher's copyright permission.
Students may charge out one Course Reserve item at a time for a course unless otherwise specified by the faculty member on the Course Reserve Form. Course Reserve material is reserved for the use of UNH students, and ONLY UNH students may charge Course Reserve material out of the building.
Faculty Exceptions:
a) The faculty member who requested material to be placed on Course Reserve may charge this material out of the library once it has been placed on Course Reserve. NO OTHER FACULTY MEMBER MAY REMOVE IT FROM COURSE RESERVE.
b) A faculty member must have permission from the Head of Access Services or the Librarian on Duty to charge out a Course Reserve book for a course s/he does not teach.
