Job Search
Use the library catalog to find circulating and reference materials, including books, audio-visual holdings, government documents, and periodical titles (for periodical articles, see the 'Journals' section, below). Our catalog uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and subject headings. LC assigns call numbers (letters and numerals) according to the book's primary subject. Philosophy materials are found primarily in the B through BD call numbers.
Quick search tips:
- Truncate with ‘?': Searching philos? in the library catalog will result in finding the
following terms philosophy, philosopher, philosophical, etc.
- Put phrases in " ": "philosophical anthropology" or "situation ethics"
- Sort results by ‘Publish date descending' to put newest items at the top of the list.
- Click on the ‘Bibliographic' tab to determine the LC subject headings for an item
and then click on those headings as links to additional material with the same
subject.
- Always click on the ‘Linked Resources' tab to check for electronic access for single
items. In multiple-result searches, the URL box at the right of the screen is a
reminder to look for a web link on the next page (or click on ‘Linked Resources').
For additional search tips, consult the library guide on Using the UNH Library Catalog (OPAC).
If you can't find something in our catalog, please use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. ILL request forms for books and articles are available at the library Information Desk, and online from the library's website. You should complete a separate ILL request form for each item requested. Bibliographic citations should be as accurate and complete as possible. Incorrect or incomplete information, such as abbreviations or lack of a publication date, will slow down receipt of material.
Reference and Circulating Books
Reference works, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks and statistical compilations provide concise overviews of a topic. Because of their usefulness, these do not circulate, but remain in the library's reference area, available to all. Circulating books and most documents may be borrowed.
Reference Books: General encyclopedias such as Encyclopedia Britannica or the World Book contain articles on philosophy and philosophers. In addition, specialized encyclopedias provide greater depth and cover less known topics. Here is a small sample of what we have:
Bertrand Russell's Dictionary of Mind, Matter and Morals. Ref B1649.R93 D5.

Journals and Other Periodicals
Popular and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, and some annual publications like yearbooks are called periodicals. Go to the Journals at the MKP Library link on our home page to find periodicals in the library or online -- you can search by title, title keyword, or browse by subject. Periodicals are shelved by title, ignoring 'the,' 'a' and 'an' at the beginning of the title. Paper journals are on the lower level of the library, microfilm and microfiche are in the microforms room, also on the lower level. For journals in Government Documents, fill in a request form at the Information Desk, or check to see if they are available online from our Library Catalog's 'Linked Resources' tab. Online journals are available from links on our home page at any Internet terminal -- use the Journals at the MKP Library link.
The following list is a sample of the range of journals on this topic at the Peterson library. The Journals at the MKP Library link provides up-to-date information on titles, dates and formats of journals.

Finding Journal/Periodical Articles:
Use an electronic index/database or print index to periodical literature (scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers) to get citations to articles on many topics.
Some print indexes to use for philosophy include: Social Sciences and Humanities Index 1907-1974. This became two publications in 1974: Humanities Index (library carries from 1974 to March 2008) and Social Sciences Index, which we have from 1974 to September 2005). These are kept in the reference collection as is Philosopher's Index 1967/68-1980.
If you already have a reference/citation to an article from a bibliography, chapter, print index, or from a database where the full text was not available, then do the following:
Use the 'Journals at the MKP Library' link on our home page to see if we have the specific issue of the journal that you need. Use the title option if you know the title of the journal that you need; use the journal title keyword option if you are not certain of the title. If the journal is available online in a database you can search by article title once you are in the appropriate database. For more on finding articles, or using the Library Catalog, consult our Library Guides on these topics.
If you don't find what you are looking for, come to the Information Desk, call us there at (203) 932-7189, or e-mail us. We can refer you to additional resources, help you search, or you can get an ILL form at the desk to request the article from another library.
