The Marvin K. Peterson Library's resources in economics include print and electronic materials. This guide presents a selection of resources, both ours and the Internet sources we list.

Use the Library Catalog to find circulating and reference materials, including books, audio-visual holdings, government documents, and periodical titles. (For periodical articles, see the Journals section.)
Our catalog uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and subject headings. LC assigns call numbers (letters and numbers) according to the book's primary subject.

Some Reference and Circulating Materials
Reference materials, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries and statistical compilations are a good place to start research. They are kept in the reference stacks on the library's entry level and can be used only in the library. Circulating materials are shelved in open stacks on the second and third levels of the library and may be borrowed. Ref. before the call number means that the book is kept in the Reference area.

Survey of Current Business. Ref. HC101 .A13. U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook. Provides information on industry reviews and forecasts in the areas of natural resources and energy, construction and related industries, industrial materials and components, production and manufacturing equipment, transportation, health care, financial, business and education services, as well as areas of the consumer economy such as textiles, foods, motor vehicles, etc. Ref. Economic Indicators. A monthly economic report prepared by the U.S. government. It provides tables and charts on the GNP, corporate profits, employment and wages, money markets, and international statistics. Ref. HC101 .A186. Also online at GPO Access.
Economic Indicators Handbook includes Gross National Product, Gross Domestic Product, business cycle indicators, cyclic indicators, economic series, consumer price index, producer price index and selected stock market indices. Ref. HC103 .E26 1992

Monthly Labor Review Online is primarily a report of the labor situation in the U.S., although it also discusses foreign labor developments. Topics range from unemployment indicators to productivity trends to research summaries.

Find them by call number and then report number. They are also online from the Library Catalog's Linked Resources tab, or from the NBER database. The NBER also publishes Economic Indicators and Releases, posted Monday through Friday.

The Marvin K. Peterson Library has been a Federal Depository Library since 1971, and our collection of government documents includes a substantial number of business resources. All currently received documents, and many of the older ones, will be found through library catalog searches. Many resources are available online; click on Linked Resources to check for the online availability of a particular item. For catalog items with the U.S. Gov't Docs location that are not online, come to the Information Desk for staff assistance.
GPO Access (Government Printing Office) contains bibliographic citations to documents published by Federal Government agencies from 1976 to the present, with links to the online publications where available.

Journals at the MKP Library on the home page is a listing of most of the periodical titles, current and historical, to which you have access through the library. Formats of journals include print, microform and electronic (online). To find:
♦Single journals or articles: If you have the citation to an article, type the title of the journal into the top search box. Results will show which databases contain the journal electronically and give you a list of available issues to search through. Available UNH Library Holdings are also given to enable you to find and/or copy the article in the library. Current and older issues of most of our print periodicals, interfiled in a single alphabetical arrangement, are on the lower level. Ask for current newspapers and microform holdings at the Circulation Desk.
♦Lists of journals by keyword or subject: Use the top search option, with the drop-down box set to Title contains all words and search with title keywords (e.g., markets, econ*, financ*, etc. [*= truncation here]). You can also select a subject category (lower drop-down search box) and select subjects like Business & Economics and the listed subcategories. These methods allow you to identify periodicals in a field and browse current issues of these periodicals, either online or in the library.

Databases and Article Indexes
The most efficient way to find articles by subject is to use an index that searches the contents of many journals at one time. The Proxy Connection provides access to most of our databases when you are outside the library and it must be used often in the library as well. Enter your 16-digit UNH ID number when requested. (This number is on the back of newer cards.)

The following is a list of some databases useful to students studying economics:
♦Print Indexes:
Business Periodicals Index (1958-2005). Ref. Z7164.C81 B983. Located in the reference stacks. Indexes articles in business journals on individual companies, accounting, marketing, banking, computer technology, economics, management, etc.
The New York Times Index (1800s, 1913-1989) and Wall Street Journal Index (1958-1989) index newspaper articles on stocks, currency exchange rates, statistics, trends and company information. Ref. AI21 .N45 (NYT Index) and Ref. HG1.W266 (WSJ Index). Full text articles to both newspapers are available through ProQuest Historical Newspapers and ProQuest Newspapers and on microform in the library.

ABI/INFORM Dateline. Provides news, analysis and information on businesses and regional market areas published in hard-to-find local and regional publications.
ABI/INFORM Global. Abstracts and some full text from national and international business and management journals, as well as company profiles with executive profiles.
ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry. Provides articles and information from periodical publications with a trade and industry focus (including market trends) in many market sectors such as finance, construction, computers, transportation, insurance and more.
Academic OneFile. A source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources.
Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress). Peer-reviewed journals, working papers and other scholarly information offered on what the site calls a "quasi open-access" basis. Access to articles requires free registration.
Business & Company Resource Center. A database of company profiles, brand information, market intelligence, rankings, financials, investment reports, histories and industry news going back twenty years. Includes the online version of the Encyclopedia of Associations, Business Rankings Annual and Brands and Their Companies.
Conference Board Online. The full text, online version of this print source of information on economics and business issues. Includes reports, articles, and economic data for the United States on management, economic and financial topics.
E-Books for Colleges (Gale Virtual Reference Library). Includes the Encyclopedia of Small Business (2002) and the Gale Encyclopedia of U.S. Economic History (1999).
FirstSearch provides access to many databases such as Dissertations from North America and Europe, EconLit, and more. Some full text. FirstSearch also provides direct access to Disclosure. Available in the library only. Ask at the Information Desk for password, if needed.
General OneFile, General Reference Center Gold, and Expanded Academic ASAP from iCONN are multidisciplinary databases that provide access to citations, abstracts and some full text of scholarly and popular journals, as well as newspapers. ¡Informe! covers Spanish and bilingual periodicals.
Mergent Online. The online version of several Mergent (formerly Moody's) publications on U.S. and international companies. Information includes company financials, company officials, and country details from the CIA World Factbook. Provides Access to EDGAR (SEC) filings that can be downloaded in excel or PDF formats. Access for 5 people at a time. Log in at the Enter Mergent link and remember to log out.
NBER Working Papers. National Bureau of Economic Research publications, which can be downloaded. We have the print publications in the library. Accessible from the library catalog if you are on the campus network. Use the proxy to access these publications if you are off-site.
ProQuest Newspaper Collection includes full text to the following newspapers: Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Hartford Courant, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. ProQuest Newspapers and ProQuest Historical Newspapers provide online coverage of most of these newspapers back to the 1800s, complete with images. The ProQuest Historical Newspaper Collection covers these newspapers for earlier dates, but cannot be searched at the same time as the regular newspaper collection, so check the dates you're looking for.
Value Line Investment Survey. Provides information on stocks, including the prices, timeliness, safety ranks, estimated dividends, low and high, P/E stocks, and stock market averages. For use in library only. Ask the librarian to log you in with a password from http://www.valueline.com/. When you are done with your session, remember to log out so that others will be able to log in. Also available in print on Permanent Reserve. CountryWatch. Maps, global economic and demographic data by country and region. Includes full text articles and data. Similar information is also available in the CIA World Factbook. Mergent also reproduces CIA data online.
OECD Economic Surveys. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) publishes reviews of member countries' economic situations as well as those of selected non-member countries, focusing on the economic history and conditions of each country examined.
Statesman's Yearbook. Ask about single-user online access in the library. Also in print: Ref. JA51 .S7 [InfoDesk - latest edition]; earlier editions kept in circulation stacks. JA51 .S7
HeinOnline Legal Periodicals. Items are image-based and fully searchable and provide comprehensive coverage from the inception of each publication.
LegalTrac. An index of more than 1,400 titles including law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals.
We have print and microfiche US code and public laws in our collection, as well as online from the Library's Linked Resources tab in the catalog. GPOAccess (the Government Printing Office site) also makes legislative materials freely available to anyone from the front page of its website. STAT-USA includes SOTN (State of the Nation), NTDB (National Trade Data Bank) and GLOBUS. STAT-USA contains domestic and international trade and market information, including country-specific information, industry-specific information, and industry-country information, as well as economic indicators. The Foreign Traders Index identifies foreign firms seeking to import U.S. products. The World Factbook, U.S. Global Trade Outlook, A Basic Guide to Exporting, Background Notes, Business America, and Country Commercial Guides are some of the publications that are available in full text. Depository. Available in the Library only, on Terminals 1 or 2. Available to the general public.
USA Trade Online includes import/export statistics in downloadable formats. A database of domestic import and export information. Data can be downloaded to disk. Depository. Available in the Library only, on Terminals 1 or 2. Available to the general public.

♦♦Taxes:
BNA Tax Management Library. The online version of print resources from the Bureau of National Affairs with primary sources like the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, tax cases and more, along with expert commentary, analysis, and updates.
CCH Tax Research Network. Provides online access to the print resources produced by the Commerce Clearing House, searchable by keyword and other terms. Includes full text of tax codes and regulations as well as analysis.
RIA Checkpoint. A database of tax accounting information. You need to register to use the database, which provides access to accounting literature, including state and federal law relating to accounting, before you can log in to use the database. You will need to register from a computer on the campus network, and that the e-mail you provide when registering cannot be from Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, or other free e-mail addresses. Your UNH e-mail account will work.

Inomics® Job Openings for Economists
JOE: Job Openings for Economists. There is also a UK-JOE from the Royal Economic Society for jobs in the United Kingdom.
Library of Economics and Liberty provides links to many other sites, organized links to data sources, and classic texts online.

World Bank Group is the site of the World Bank. Provides information on developing economies by country and by topic, such as agriculture and climate change.
♦United States Federal Reserve System:
Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System has links to jobs, economic research and data, and publications. This is the link to the twelve branches of the Federal Reserve system.
Fed101 from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City provides an introduction to the Federal Reserve system, other educational resources and links to other sites.
Federal Reserve Board Publications are reports from the Federal Reserve Board, comprised of economic commentaries, economic trends and U.S. finance.
FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, provides over 3,000 U.S. economic time series downloadable in excel and text. FRED includes ALFRED (Archival Federal Reserve Economic Data) for "vintage" sets.

EDGAR. EDGAR is an access point for current directory style information and financial reports for most publicly traded companies. SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) filings can also be found in business databases with financial information, such as Mergent.
