Citing the sources referenced in research papers is one of the most important parts of scholarly work. There are a number of citation styles. Those used by the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) are probably the best known, but others include Chicago style, following The Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian style, following Kate Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, and many others. The library provides some assistance with formatting your citations in various style guides available at the Information Desk. Online, consult our Style Guides.
Understanding the protocols of these different citation styles can be a daunting challenge. Many database providers, such as Thomson Gale, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest, have built features into their products that will help you format the citations properly for the style required by your instructor. Some databases put them in the proper format for you, individually or in lists, and you can then print or save to disk, or e-mail them for use later when you are ready for them. A word of caution: Always review the citations formatted by databases and check back with your instructor to make sure the format is correct.
Many databases also offer the option of exporting the citations into software programs like EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, and others, or into Web-based programs like RefWorks, which then reformat the periodicals citations in the style you need. These programs will also format citations for sources like books, encyclopedias, and websites, which are outside the scope of most periodicals databases. These citation-exporting programs are not available at the Peterson Library. They must be purchased by you and installed on your own laptop or home computer. In the case of RefWorks, you must start a subscription to the service. Once you do so, you can export citations directly if you are using a database on your laptop or home computer, or you can e-mail the citations and open them on the computer that has the software installed. Web-based products like RefWorks can be used immediately by subscribers anywhere on the Internet. The programs and subscriptions are fairly costly to purchase, but may be worth the investment for use for the duration of your academic career. Check for prices and free trial offers via their Web sites (e.g., http://www.endnote.com/, http://www.refworks.com/, etc.).
Given below are the steps to follow in using some of the citation management features offered by several popular databases and providers.
