The Marvin K. Peterson Library's resources in the environmental sciences include print and electronic materials. This guide presents a selection of resources.

Use the Library Catalog to find circulating and reference materials, including books, audio-visual holdings, government documents, and periodical titles. (For periodical articles, see the Journals section.)
Our catalog uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and subject headings. LC assigns call numbers (letters and numbers) according to the book's primary subject.

?If you can't find something in our catalog, please use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. ILL request forms for books and articles are available at the library Information Desk and online from the library's website. You should complete a separate ILL request form for each item requested. The Marvin K. Peterson Library has been a Federal Depository Library since 1971. All currently received documents, and many of the older ones, will be found through library catalog searches. Many resources are available online; click on Linked Resources to check for the online availability of a particular item. For catalog items with the [U.S. Gov't Docs] location that are not online, come to the Information Desk for staff assistance.
GPO Access (Government Printing Office) contains bibliographic citations to documents published by Federal Government agencies from 1976 to the present, with links to the online publications where available. Also see Selected Internet Resources for lists of online government sources.

Journals and Other Periodicals
Journals at the MKP Library on the home page is a listing of most of the periodical titles, current and historical, to which you have access through the library. Formats of journals include print, microform and electronic (online). To find:
♦Single journals or articles: If you have the citation to an article, type the title of the journal into the top search box. Results will show which databases contain the journal electronically and give you a list of available issues to search through. Available UNH Library Holdings are also given to enable you to find and/or copy the article in the library. Current and older issues of most of our print periodicals, interfiled in a single alphabetical arrangement, are on the lower level. Ask for current newspapers and microform holdings at the Circulation Desk.
♦Lists of journals by keyword or subject: Use the top search option, with the drop-down box set to Title contains all words and search with title keywords (e.g., water, environment*, pollut*, etc. [*= truncation here]). You can also select a subject category (lower drop-down search box) and select subjects like Earth & Environmental Sciences and the listed subcategories. These methods allow you to identify periodicals in a field and browse current issues of these periodicals, either online or in the library.

Science and Health Topics
CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) indexes material from books, journals, conference proceedings, dissertations, software packages, and audiovisual materials.
Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Online. Enjoy online access to illustrated articles from the latest edition of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology.
Engineering Village features citations and abstracts from engineering journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. The technical databases and resources include Compendex, the most comprehensive bibliographic database of engineering research literature, and Scirus, a free index to scientific literature on the Internet.
ENGnetBASE is CRC's online collection of engineering handbooks. Browse through the directories by handbook categories, which include civil and environmental engineering.
GeoRef covers the realm of geoscience and includes bibliographic records pertaining to mineralogy and crystallography. The database, which is maintained by the American Geological Institute, contains citations from journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, theses, and reports. However, articles will link to full text only when available in any other EBSCO database to which the library subscribes.
Handbook of Chemistry and Physics Online is the online version of the CRC Handbook.
Health and Wellness Resource Center allows researchers to look for information on environmental health matters from a number of sources, including reference books, pamphlets, newsletters, and hundreds of full-text journals.
Knovel K-Essentials. Access to several classic reference e-books on the topics of chemistry and engineering.
Knovel Library (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering). Full text electronic manuals, handbooks and other reference texts on the topics of chemistry, chemical engineering and engineering.
ScienceDirect presents an index to books, journals and conference proceedings, reviews of videos, books, etc. Access to journals online to which our library subscribes, when accessed from the library catalog or remotely from the Journals at the MKP Library link on our home page.
Science Reference Center is helpful for all science research projects. Included in this database are reference books, journals, biographies, and images. Topics covered: biology, chemistry, earth, space, the environment, health & medicine, physics, technology and wildlife.
Wiley InterScience is an index to scientific and technical publications from John Wiley & Sons. Select Earth and Environmental Science on the Advanced Search page. Some full text articles are available from journals to which the library subscribes.
Multidisciplinary Topics
Academic OneFile. A source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources.
The Conference Board is a full text online version of the print source of information on economic and business matters. Includes reports, articles and data for the United States on management, economic and financial topics. You may research reports on environmental issues by using the pull-down menu of topics on the home page. Select Environment, Health, Safety then click on research if you do not know the exact title of the report.
CountryWatch features maps, global economic and demographic data by country and region. Individual country profiles include an Environmental Overview. Full text.
E-Books for Colleges/Gale Virtual Reference Library. Access to reference resources including Beacham's Guide to the Endangered Species of North America (2000), U*X*L Encyclopedia of Landforms and Other Geological Features (2004) and World of Earth Science (2003).
Emerald Fulltext. For journal articles on environmental management.
Expanded Academic ASAP provides access to citations and abstracts to full text titles in both scholarly and popular periodicals.
FirstSearch offers a number of databases in all academic fields, including environmental science and related matters. Provides access to citations and abstracts from English-language and international periodicals and dissertations. Access via FirstSearch icon, in library only. Ask at the Information Desk and a staff member will log you on.
General OneFile offers information on a broad range of subjects, indexing titles from general interest magazines, academic journals, business and technology publications, newspapers and news services.
Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS). A searchable database of over 8,000 federal and private funding opportunities in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Updated daily.
ProQuest Education Journals indexes and abstracts periodical literature pertaining to education, including environmental education.
ProQuest Newspapers offers full text coverage of the Boston Globe (1980-), Christian Science Monitor (1988-), Hartford Courant, (1992-), Los Angeles Times, (1985-), New York Times (1980-), Wall Street Journal (1984-), and Washington Post (1987-). Earlier coverage is available in ProQuest Historical Newspapers. (Recent) Newspapers and Historical Newspapers must be searched separately.
LexisNexis Academic - Statistical provides a collection of over statistical tables from U.S. Government and international trade and professional organizations, some covering the environment and ecology.
Legal Topics
HeinOnline provides full text back to the late 1800s of many top national and international legal journals as well as the Federal Register from its inception in 1936 up to the 1990s.
LegalTrac. An index of more than 1,400 titles including law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals.
LexisNexis Academic Universe allows you to search reference, legal, news, business and medical sources. Through the legal component of this database you may search legal news, case law, codes and regulations related to environmental topics.

BioMedCentral provides free "open access" to journals online, mostly in the biomedical sciences. Look at the list of journals for more detail.
BMC Ecology, published by BioMed Central. Access original research articles about the environmental, behavioral and population ecology of plants, animals, and microbes.
Department of Biology and Environmental Science, Univ. of New Haven. The department's home page, complete with links to the degree and certificate programs it offers.
Directory of Open Access Journals. A list of open access journals organized by subject, hosted by the Lund University Library, Sweden. Includes journals on earth and environmental sciences.
ehp Online. A peer-reviewed journal that examines the effect of the environment on human health. Online access in the Peterson Library. Also available in print at the library: current five years in periodicals collection; older than five years ago in the Government Documents collection.
EarthTrends, The Environmental Information Portal, World Resources Institute. Sponsored by The World Bank, this comprehensive database focuses on global environmental, social and economic issues.
FedStats. Contains statistics from more than 100 U.S. federal agencies.
HighWire Press from Stanford University indexes articles from journals in science, medicine and technology, including many related to ecology and the environment.
Internet Public Library, Subject Collections, Environmental Sciences & Ecology. Includes informational links to earth sciences sites.
