Globalization is the watchword of the 21st century. Global studies concerns itself with the cultures of nations and regions beyond one's own country as well as the study of the larger issues facing the world today from a global perspective. While the latter is the focus of this guide, the Peterson Library has a wide array of resources for global studies from both perspectives. These resources include print materials, electronic journals, periodical indexes, and research databases.

This guide is a selective bibliography of resources, both ours and the Internet sources we list. Use the library catalog to find more resources here and search the Internet, carefully and critically, for more websites. Additional library guides, notably Effective Communication and Cultural/Diversity, Foreign Language and Literature Resources, History and Historical Resources, International Business, and others may be useful for a particular focus on global studies with resources that are not duplicated in this guide.

We are here to help with your research. During library hours, visit us at the Information Desk, which is diagonally across from the library entrance on the main level or call us there at 203-932-7189. Contact us anytime by email at LibraryHelp@newhaven.edu and we will respond as quickly as possible during regular library hours. For an overview of research methods and resources, try our interactive online Virtual Reference Tour.

Note: This online guide contains direct links to websites. To locate any of the sites listed, if you have printed out this guide, simply type the name of the organization in Google or another search engine to find a link to the site.

Library Home Page

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the library home page. If you start at the UNH website, click on "Library" down on the left side of the home page, where you will find several important links, including the following:

Library Catalog

Use the library catalog to find circulating and reference materials, including books, audiovisual holdings, government documents, and periodical titles. For periodical articles, see the Journal Articles section.

Our catalog uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and subject headings. LC assigns call numbers (letters and numerals) according to the book's primary subject. This puts similar materials together on the shelves and allows you to find them using the call number.

Quick search tips:

- Truncate with ‘?': globa? will get global, globally, globalization, etc.
- Put phrases in " ": "international relations" or "multinational corporation" or "global
   warming"

- Sort results by Publish date descending to get newest items at the top of the results
   list.
- Click on the Bibliographic tab to determine the LC subject headings for an
item and then click on those headings as links to additional material with the same
   subject.
- Always click on the Linked Resources tab to check for electronic access for single
items. In multiple-result  searches, the URL box at the  right of the screen is a
reminder to look for a web link on the next page or click on "Linked Resources."

Look for search tips at the bottom of the catalog search page. For more detailed search advice, consult our guide on Using the UNH Library Catalog and sharpen your skills with our interactive Online Library Catalog Tutorial.

 Interlibrary Loan

UNH students, faculty and staff can use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service for materials we do not own. ILL request forms for books and articles are available at the library Information Desk, and online from the library's website. A separate ILL request form is needed for each item. Bibliographic citations should be as accurate and complete as possible. Incorrect or incomplete information, e.g. abbreviations, lack of a publication date, etc., will slow down receipt of material. It is the Peterson Library's policy not to order course textbooks. Read more about Interlibrary Loan.

Government Documents

As a federal documents depository, we currently get about a third of U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) publications. These include periodicals, federal agency reports, Congressional hearings, federal census information, and much more. Our recently received documents will be found in library catalog searches and may be here in physical formats like paper, microfiche, CD-ROM, etc. or, increasingly, in online formats via the catalog. Be sure to click on Linked Resources to check for electronic availability. For those [GovDocs] items that are not online, and for assistance of any kind with documents, come to the Information Desk. Read more about Government Documents in our library guide.

Available UNH library holdings are also given to enable you to find and/or copy the article in the library. Periodicals are on the lower level. Current newspapers are at the Circulation Desk on the entry level.

♦Lists of journals by keyword or subject:  Use the top search option, with the drop-down box set to Title contains all words and search with title keywords, e.g. internat* or global [*= truncation here]. Internet Resources

The Internet resources given in the various guides the library publishes are all either produced professionally or recommended by knowledgeable reviewers. While there is much good information freely available on the Internet, caution must always be exercised when using online resources. Generally, it is best to stay with .edu or .gov domains. These are educational institutions and government agencies. The .com web sites are primarily commercial in nature. A site with the .org domain may be a respected professional organization, like the American Psychological Association, or it could also be a biased opinion group with skewed data and an axe to grind on a subject.

Always examine websites carefully. Who are these people? What are their professional credentials (the "About Us" material)? Where is their information coming from? Check their sources, and if necessary, check their sources' sources. Are they being objective or are they manipulating data? How current is the data? When was the last time the website itself was updated -- this is often found at the bottom of the home page. Be critical! Be sure to note the web address and part (page, chapter, section, etc.) you are referring to, and cite the references correctly. Websites need to be documented as sources just like books and journal articles.
