About Akash

Growing up, I attended school in Dubai, India and California. I completed my bachelor’s degree in microbiology and biotechnology at Southeast Missouri State University. I also was an active member of several student organizations, and I played for the university’s Division 2 rugby team. After graduation, I worked at CIPLA, one of India’s top pharmaceutical companies in their research facility. I also traveled to Africa, where I worked with the Angels of East Africa orphanage.

Why did you choose UNH and what attracted you to your graduate program?

During my travels, I became aware of the importance of a health care management system to integrate various aspects and components of health care. The lack of a health care facility and a proper management system in Africa and some parts of India was a driving factor for me to get into the field of healthcare administration. I was impressed with the University of New Haven’s reputation. I also knew a couple friends who graduated from UNH and were happy with their experiences at the University. I also liked the wide variety of courses offered and the faculty support. Just months into my first course, I knew I chose the right program and college to pursue my dreams.

How have your experiences at UNH helped prepare you for your desired career path?

The experiences I am participating in are preparing me for a successful future in my field of study. All of the professors have a background of rich experiences and extensive knowledge. The opportunity to study long-term care and medical group management is helping me prepare for my goal of one day being able to manage a medical group.

Tell us about a memorable hands-on learning experience such as a class project, applied research or an internship that you have participated in.

My experiences at the orphanage in East Africa were nothing short of life changing – even though all I did was distribute food and play soccer with the children. I was humbled by the culture, traditions and lives that the local people lead.

What are your post-graduation plans?

After graduation I would like to gain real-life work experience in health management at a leading healthcare facility. My dream is to make health care more affordable and accessible to large groups by bringing together outstanding medical practitioners and counsellors to provide cutting-edge medical services. With the tools I learned from UNH, I intend to travel the globe and put my knowledge and experience to use by serving the community.
