Advice for Family Members:

  • Plan ahead—don’t wait until last minute to check E-Pay, rectify your bill, buy supplies, etc. This will aid in lowering your stress level and helping your student feel more prepared.
  • Be a co-pilot.
  • Look at the website together and talk about resources on campus and how to ask for help.

  • Experimenting with alcohol/other substances to fit in
  • Anxiety about quality of time management skills

Advice for Family Members:

  • Be prepared to see a mix of emotions and signals from your student. Your student will face many ups and downs as he/she goes through the transition to college life. Be patient and supportive!
  • Encourage your student to stay on campus (despite how homesick he/she is) and become familiar with the campus. Point out how getting involved can help.
  • Visit your student if you are able. Stop in for lunch or take your student and his/her roommates to dinner.
