Mechanical Engineering Internship

Increasingly, engineering employers indicate a preference in hiring graduates who have had some work experience prior to graduation. Responses to our industry and alumni surveys, as well as input from the M.E. Advisory Group, reinforce this fact. The mechanical engineering curriculum includes a required non-credit industry internship.

To satisfy this requirement, students must spend a minimum of 300 hours (roughly equivalent to two months of full-time work) performing engineering-related duties for a manufacturing company, consulting firm, technical organization, or government agency. within the context of full or part time work, co-op position, summer job, apprenticeship or volunteer service at any time during undergraduate studies.

Some students in this program already have fulfilled the internship requirement prior to their junior year because they work part time, full time, or have summer jobs in areas closely related to mechanical engineering. The internship underscores the importance of practical experience in launching a successful career to all mechanical engineering students. The Career Development Office makes every effort to assist students in locating a work site.
