The University of New Haven has one of the very few undergraduate system engineering programs in the United States. This program has been designed and developed with input from top companies from the aerospace, defense, and manufacturing industries. The B.S. degree in System Engineering is accredited by the Institute of Industrial Engineers and by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). System engineering students are educated and trained to guide development initiatives and make difficult trade-off decisions during the complex system design and development process. Students are able to build and manage complex decision models that represent the development of integrated multidisciplinary engineering systems to optimize the design of the system for its entire lifecycle. Faculty in the System Engineering program are experts at designing systems for lifecycle considerations, including manufacturing, assembly, supply chain, logistics, transportation, reliability, maintainability and environmental considerations.

System engineers are in demand in the defense, aerospace, transportation, pharmaceutical, medical device, and software industries, and many other industries that develop complex engineered products. Even at the early stages of their careers, there is a significant current demand for system engineers at government agencies and laboratories, including the United States Defense Contract Management Agency.

Undergraduate System Engineering students gain knowledge and expertise in system lifecycle development and analysis, including the Department of Defense Model (DoD 5000), the International Model (ISO/IEC 15288), and the National Society of Professional Engineers Model. Students learn to apply these system development models during in-class projects, design process courses, and their Senior Capstone Design Project. Top engineered systems companies are utilizing this unique system engineering methodology to reduce the risk of failure of complex development projects.

 4) State-of-the-Art Multiuse Laboratory

The new Industrial and System Engineering Laboratory built in August 2008 is a state-of-the-art multiuse laboratory designed to enable innovative teaching practices and collaborative learning by incorporating flexibility in room use. Advanced system engineering software in the laboratory includes IBM DOORS, SysML, Matlab, Simulink, Labview, Arena, Quest, FICO Xpress Solver, Lindo, Lingo, Solidworks, Autocad, Minitab, SPSS, Boothroyd-Dewhurst Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) software, and Boothroyd-Dewhurst Design for Environment (DFE) software. The laboratory also hosts rapid prototyping technology that includes a Dimension 3D printer that enables students to create part and product concepts in ABS plastic. Additionally, students can perform reverse engineering with advanced photogrammetry and 3D scanning and vision equipment.

5) Opportunities For Undergraduate Research

Faculty members in the System Engineering program involve undergraduate students in research through course projects and independent research projects. Undergraduate students perform research with faculty in sustainable system design, rapid prototyping technologies, lifecycle assessment, and system engineering methodologies and tools.

The System Engineering is a growing program that provides one-on-one, individualized attention for engineering students with exceptional advising. Faculty members work with students to involve them in laboratory exercises and research, to provide professional development opportunities and resume-building advice, and to connect students with a variety of engineering internship opportunities. The internship is a required component of the System Engineering program that allows students to gain invaluable professional experience and is conducted in accordance with the National Society of Experiential Education (NSEE) guidelines.
