Chemical Engineering Laboratory

The Chemical Engineering Laboratory is used in several junior and senior chemical engineering courses. The equipment is listed below:

Plate and Frame Filter System

Main Components: 6-inch Avery filter press, 2 hp Moyno progressive cavity slurry pump, 9 cu. ft. Polyethlene dispensing hopper, Masoneilan Camflex control valve, pressure transmitter and controller, filtrate flow transmitter and recorder.

Typical Use: Obtain data to design a filter for removal of calcium carbonate from an aqueous solution.

Fluids Network

Main Components: Interchangeable lengths of schedule 80 pvc pipe with various diameters, fittings, valves, flanges and orifice assemblies; storage tank and pump; rotameter and paddle-wheel electronic flowmeter; flow control valve; differential pressure sensor.

Typical Use: Measure pressure drop across various pipe sections, valves and fittings to obtain friction factor information.

Thermal Conductivity Apparatus

Main Components: Short rods of various metals heated with steam at one end and cooled with city water at the other end.

Typical Use: Measure the thermal conductivity of different metals.

Double Pipe Heat Exchangers

Main Components: 1/4-inch tube inside 1-inch tube heat exchangers made of copper and stainless steel, steam-water blending system, valves, electronic flowmeters, thermocouples and temperature display.

Typical Use: Determine heat transfer coefficients for sensible heat transfer.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Main Components: I/O Schott glass shell with nine 1-cm glass tubes, mounted for vertical or horizontal operation. Steam can be used on either the shell or tube side with water on the other side. A water flowmeter, steam pressure gauge and several thermocouples are mounted on the system.

Typical Use: Determine heat transfer coefficients for design of an exchanger for phase change operations (boiling and condensation) or sensible heat operations.

Double Effect Evaporator

Main Components: Corning glass system with 2 boiling heat exchangers (vapor coil in shell), 2 vapor-liquid separators, with level control systems, tanks for feed, condensates and concentrated product, feed pump and vacuum pump system.

Typical Use: Determine data required for the design of a large-scale evaporator system, including heat transfer coefficients.

Bubble Cap Distillation Column

Main Components: H.S. Martin 4-inch diameter bubble-cap column with 10 trays, electrically heated kettle, water-cooled condenser and electric reflux splitter. Adaptable for batch or continuous operation.

Typical Use: Design a column to separate a mixture of alcohols, using the lab column to obtain tray efficiency data.

Packed Tower Gas Absorption

Main Components: 6-inch diameter column packed with polypropylene intalox saddles with a height of 2 meters, water flow and temperature control system, air flow control system, ammonia vapor flow control system, sump level control system. Bailey programmable-logic controllers used to control flows, temperatures and level.

Typical Use: Obtain data needed to design a packed column for removal of ammonia from an air stream by scrubbing with water.

Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor System

Main Components: Two 2-liter jacketed, glass reactors, each with level and jacket temperature control systems and two feed tanks with flow control systems. Bailey programmable-logic controllers used to control temperatures, feed flow rates and reactor levels.

Typical Use: Determine the kinetic parameters to design a large reactor system.

Bailey Lan 90 Process Control System

Main Components: PC running the QNX operating system with Bailey’s Lan90 Process Control View software package, interfaced to the programmable logic controllers on the gas absorption and reaction systems. Allows these processes to be run from the computer with trend displays of all process variables.

Typical Use
: Modeling of the dynamics of parts of the gas absorption or reactor system, tuning of the controllers, as well as normal operation of these two processes from a “control room” environment.

Tray Drier:

Main Components: Armfield tray drier with air flow and temperature control, continuous measurement of sample mass, air temperature and humidity sensors.

Typical Use: Product design; e.g., design a fruit snack, similar to a fruit roll-up, using a fresh fruit. Determine product specifications, such as thickness and water content, as well as process and drier specifications.
