Doctor of Engineering
Marc Benhuri, D.M.D, is owner of the Benhuri Center for Laser and Implant Dentistry in New York City, which is billed as “New York’s most sought after dental facility visited by celebrities, CEOs and foreign dignitaries from around the world.”
Dr. Benhuri started his career with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, working on codes and standards for nuclear power plants. In 1970, he enrolled in the dentistry program at the University of Pittsburgh, becoming the first engineer to be accepted into that program. He earned dual degrees in surgery and prosthodontics.
While enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, he created new designs for dental implants, improving the success rate from 50 percent to 90 percent.
He went on to start his own practice and founded the Department of Dental Implants at Columbia University. He previously served as a clinical professor of prosthodontics at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Dental Medicine. His specialties include esthetic, restorative, implant, laser and biological dentistry as well as prosthodontics.
His patients have included former President George H.W. Bush – when he was head of the CIA – former President Bill Clinton, former Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the Shah of Iran.
He wrote and published Price for Freedom, which details his successful effort to bring his father, who was condemned to death for being an industrialist, and other family members out of Iran. The best-selling book has been turned into a movie that will debut at the Hoboken Film Festival in Middletown, N.Y. this month, and it will then be screened at the Cannes International Film Festival in June.
A member of the University of New Haven’s Board of Governors, Dr. Benhuri earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from UNH. He lives with his wife, Yana, in New York City. The couple has a son.
