2005 Conference Coach of the Year
Northeastern University, 2001
Faherty has built University of New Haven Women's Soccer into one of the top programs in the region. Entering his eighth season at UNH in 2009, Faherty is already the winningest coach in the program's 16-year history with 72 career victories at UNH.
The turnaround under his watch has seen UNH go from just four wins in his first season to a combined 50 wins and two NCAA appearances in the last four years - the first two NCAA berths for the women's soccer program. Faherty helped recruit high-level talent, including three-straight conference Player of the Year award winners in Crystal Lindsay and Selina Moylan. Lindsay, a two-time All-American, is the program's all-time leading scorer, while Moylan, who graduated after last season and joins the coaching staff this season, was a program-record three-time All-American. The 2008 team was also named a NSCAA/adidas National Academic Team, demostrating Faherty's ability to produce well-rounded student-athletes.
The Chargers finished their 2008 campaign with a 9-10-1 overall record and in their first season competing in the Northeast-10 Conference, UNH finished 7-7 in conference play. The 2008 team also advanced to the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament. The Chargers season eventually concluded in a 1-0 loss to the eventual NCAA Semifinalists, the College of St. Rose.
During the 2008 season, Faherty's recruit, Moylan played in her first international competition when she represented the Republic of Ireland in a match versus the USA national team at Giants Stadium. Moylan earned her fourth All-Region honors and was named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team.
UNH entered 2007 ranked 23rd in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, marking the third straight season under his leadership that the team was ranked in the NSCAA/adidas national Division II poll. Faherty has led UNH to as high as No. 13 nationally, in the season-ending 2005 poll.
After losing five seniors to graduation following the 2006 season, the 2007 squad started slowly. The team opened 1-2-2 before finding its way and reeling off wins in 10 of its next 11 matches. The season included a win at then-No. 9 Dowling, 3-2 in double overtime, and the team played 7 of its 21 matches against nationally-ranked competition in all. Despite being forced to have six different players see goalkeeping duty, Faherty and UNH still made it four seasons in a row with at least 11 victories, going 12-7-2.
Following the season, Moylan was named Daktronics Northeast Region Player of the Year and Second Team All-America by both Daktronics and the NSCAA/adidas - becoming the first player in program history to earn a third All-America award.
In 2006, UNH made its second straight NCAA appearance, advancing to the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships Northeast Regional in West Chester, Pa. With 12 wins during a regular season which saw UNH ranked as high as 15th in the NSCAA/adidas national rankings, the Chargers earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA regional. Crystal Lindsay, one of Faherty's first recruits as head coach at UNH, shattered the school's all-time and single-season records for goals and points and put her name onto the NCAA's all-time scoring list. Lindsay ‘07 and Moylan ‘09 both captured All-America awards, with second and third team selections, respectively. Additionally, Desirée Guenther ‘07 became the program's first-ever Academic All-America award winner.
The 2005 season was the most successful in school history, with the team not only making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, but also winning a first-round game to advance to the "Sweet 16". They were the Northeast Region's #2 ranked team and ended the season 13th in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings. Faherty was named conference Coach of the Year after the team won 17 matches, and Crystal Lindsay won the first of her two league Player of the Year awards. The program produced a league-high seven All-Conference players, including four First Team selections.
The team improved by three or more wins in each of Faherty's first four seasons, and was the 12th-most improved team in Division II in 2005.
A former standout soccer player at Northeastern University in Boston, Faherty spent a year coaching in England while earning a postgraduate degree in football industries at Liverpool University.
As a player, Faherty was a four-year starter and three-year team captain for the Huskies. The team MVP earned America East All-Conference and All-Tournament honors as a senior and participated in the New England Senior Bowl. Following college he played one year with the Cape Cod Crusaders of the USL.
Faherty has become extremely active in the local club soccer scene, and is the director of coaching for CFC Impact. He also serves as a Connecticut State ODP Head Coach.
