The 2008 season will be Hugo Montesinos's eighth year as head men's volleyball coach at the University of New Haven.
He has led the Chargers to a 92-76 (.548) record in seven seasons, including the program's best-ever season in 2006 (19-8 overall record). Montesinos took the Chargers to a second place finish in the EIVA's Hay Division in 2004. In 2001, UNH went 9-10 in the program's first year as a varsity sport.
Montesinos has brought a wealth of volleyball experience, both on the national and international scene, to UNH. In 1993, he coached both the men’s and women’s college league teams at his alma mater, the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru.
In 1988, Montesinos was an assistant coach for the women’s National Team of Peru, helping guide the team to a Silver Medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.
As a player with over 20 years of experience, Montesinos played with the Regatas Club of Lima for six years, and he played at the college level at University of San Marcos from 1987 to 1990. Hugo continues to play in several national and international tournaments, including a six-year stint with the National Team of Peru.
Montesinos has also served as an assistant coach for the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team, helping the Chargers to the Northeast Championship and a berth in the Elite Eight in 1999. He assisted with the team again in 2006, helping UNH to the NCAA Tournament for the 21st time in school history.
