Al Seibert

 Head Coach
Third Season

SUNY-Fredonia, 1985
Career Record: 19-37

Al Seibert is in his third season as the head coach of the University of New Haven men's basketball program. Seibert joined the UNH staff as the school’s seventh head coach in July, 2005.

Seibert has brought an influx of talent into the UNH men's program, with his staff bringing ten of this year's 14 players into the program in the last two seasons. Included among those recruits is last season's East Coast Conference Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-ECC selection Cassius Chaney.

In 2006-07, the University of New Haven was competitive throughout its schedule and ultimately won the regular-season finale at Concordia to improve to 9-19 overall and 8-12 in East Coast Conference play.  That earned UNH the eighth and final spot in the ECC tournament, where they were neck-and-neck with top-seeded NYIT until very late in the contest. The Chargers gelled late in the season, winning 7 of the final 12 regular-season games to earn its spot in the league tournament.

Seibert came to UNH with a wealth of experience at the NCAA's highest level, having worked in Division I for ten seasons prior to his arrival as the head coach of the Chargers. Seibert has also surrounded himself on this year's staff with a pair of assistants who played basketball in Division I.

Seibert joined UNH from University of Hartford (Division I, America East Conference), where he had been a member of the Hawks’ staff for five seasons. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach at Hartford at the start of the 2004-05 season, after serving as the top assistant since 2000.

Seibert also spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Western Kentucky University (1994-95 through 1997-98). In 1994-95, the Hilltoppers posted a 27-4 record and were ranked as high as 18th in the Associated Press national rankings. WKU captured the Sun Belt conference title that season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA’s, WKU defeated the University of Michigan in the first round before falling to the University of Kansas by only five points in the second round.

Coach Seibert worked as administrative assistant for the men’s basketball program at the University of Pittsburgh (BIG EAST) during the 1993-94 season, and he also has experience coaching at the high school level in his home state of Pennsylvania.

In his first season as head coach (2005-06), the Chargers finished with a 10-18 record. They were 8-12 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (later renamed the East Coast Conference), and advanced to the league quarterfinals before falling to University of Bridgeport.

In Seibert's first season as head coach, then-senior John Sullivan became one of only four players in UNH history to record at least 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. He was named to the First Team All-NYCAC squad after averaging 18.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.

A native of McKees Rock, Pa., Seibert earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a concentration in law and justice from SUNY-Fredonia. He has one daughter, Katie.
