FEDERAL STAFFORD LOANS
Federal Stafford loans are a primary financial aid source for Graduate students. Stafford loans are available to U.S. citizen and eligible non-citizens who are enrolled on a minimum half time basis (5 credits per trimester).
There are two types of Stafford loans: need based Subsidized Stafford loans and non-need based Unsubsidized Stafford loans. Each student's individual financial need is calculated based on the following formula:
Cost of Attendance (COA)- Expected Family Contribution (EFC) = Need
The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is calculated by the Federal Department of Education from the financial information reported on the FAFSA. The EFC formula considers income, assets, family size and number of family members in college.
Subsidized Stafford Loans—is a federally subsidized loan program available on the basis of financial need. For students who are eligible for a Subsidized Stafford Loan, the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while you are in school at least half-time, for the first six months after you leave school (your grace period) and during periods of deferment (a postponement of loan payments). A FAFSA must be completed to qualify for a Stafford Loan.
Unsubsidized Stafford Loans—A loan program created for students who do not qualify, in whole or in part, for Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans. The U.S. Department of Education does not pay the interest on this loan. The interest rate is currently fixed at 6.8% as of July 1, 2006 and the interest will start accruing on the date of your first disbursement. There is an option to pay the interest while in school if the student should want to. The Unsubsidized Stafford Loan does not go into repayment until you have dropped below half-time status, six months after your leave school (your grace period) and during periods of deferment (a postponement of loan payments). A FAFSA must be completed to qualify for a Stafford Loan.
