Vision

The Hazell Center for Hospitality Sales & Event Management in the School of Business at the University of New Haven will be established as a leader among entities attending to the sales and delivery of hospitality and event services in a global marketplace.

Mission

To foster the understanding of the dynamics between hospitality sales and event management in the context of professional sales, consumer behavior, and service excellence in the global hospitality and event industry.

Objectives 

The mission statement will be operationalized through goals and objectives that attend to excellence of achievement following Dean Boronico's Six-Point Plan.  The Six-Point Plan will form a basis of development that reflects best practice; and will provide a framework from which Center activities can be coordinated and an action plan formulated. 

Hazell Center Initiatives & Accomplishments

Academic Program Development 
  • New Curricula Implemented—Course outlines and coverage sheets completed for 11 courses.
  • New course development in HTM 225 Restaurant Management, and HTM 415 Trade Show Management.
  • Reinstated HTM 325 Destination Sales & Marketing.
Professional Enrichment Activities 
  • Organized and hosted three influential five-session Professional Enrichment tracks, each awarding a respective certificate of recognition. The tracks were Hospitality Sales, Hospitality Operations, and Hospitality Financial Management.
Professional Seminars
  • Held community literacy seminar entitled "Hospitality Financial Management."
Experential Learning Initiatives
  • Internship placements in 2006: ARAMARK, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Marriott International, Walt Disney World, Woodbridge Country Club, Hilton Hotels, Glen Sanders Mansion, Sage American Bar & Grill, New Haven County Cutters, Colwen Management, Interstate Hotels, American Thoracic Society, Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, and others.
  • Developed an integrated fieldwork program requiring students to complete 800 hours of industry experience before enrolling in the internship course.
  • Delivered five signature events (Dress for Success, LIFE Expo, Defend Against Cancer 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Recovery Bowl, and Extreme Mudd Volleyball), generating over $8,000 for College of Business experiential learning initiatives.
  • Created and opened the Hazell Nut Café, a student-run, quick-service coffee shop.
  • Operated Fusion, and a student-run restaurant.
Research
  • Developing an initiative with the Connecticut Lodging Association to compile lodging sector statistics, including occupancy, financial data, wage and employment survey, business development, and similar research lines.
Environmental Feedback
  • Created and met with the Hazell Center Advisory Council. The Council provides feedback on each of the preceding five areas, and offers guidance for continuous improvement of the Hospitality and Tourism programs and the Hazell Center.
  • Plans underway for a symposium on Sports and Tourism.
