Manchester, N.H. -- The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to nationally-ranked #24 Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday afternoon at Larkin Field.

UNH falls to 2-7 with the loss, while Southern New Hampshire improved to 5-2-2 overall. The Penmen led the contest 1-0 after scoring at the 16:16 mark. Simon Kearney put a left-footed blast into the net from 25 yards out off a pass from Matt Delaney.

"The goal we gave up in the first half, I thought was a bad goal," said Matt Verni. "Despite the final score, I thought we played very well in the second half. Ajani Maillard had a great chance ... they cleared it off the line, and Ajani beat the goalkeeper to the ball. But at the last second one of their players scissor kicked it off the line."

"In the second half, I thought we played very well," said Verni. "Justin Fernandez beat two defenders and then got taken down in the box. I thought it was a penalty, but we didn't get the call. We gave up a penalty kick for their second goal, and it was legitimate and they finished it off. They were just more deadly in the final third of the field than we were today, finished their chance. And once again, we were chasing a lead as we have been in most of our losses.  And that proved too much."

The second goal for the Penmen came off the foot of David McGuire on a penalty kick at 58:08, while Kearney found the net once again at 77:00 to close out the scoring.

The Chargers return to East Coast Conference action on Saturday, September 23 at UNH's Dodds Stadium when the team hosts Molloy College at 1:00 p.m.
