North Andover, Mass. -- The University of New Haven men's soccer team continues to play competitively, but could not get over the hump again on Sunday in a 1-0 loss to the host school at the Merrimack Tournament. The Warriors won both of their matches at the two-day event to capture the title.
UNH, which falls to 2-6 on the season, dropped consecutive 1-0 decisions at this tournament and three of the team's six losses overall have been by one-goal margins. Merrimack, ranked sixth in the New England Region by the NSCAA this week, improves to 6-2 overall.
At 67:36 in the second half, Merrimack's Donnie Aylward crossed a ball from the right side, and Tiago Dalboni poked the ball into the right side for his seventh goal of the season.
"We played better in the second half, but they were the better team today," said UNH head coach Matt Verni. "They had more chances and were more physical than us. That said, we were in it the whole time."
UNH was credited with just one shot, coming in the first period, while Merrimack shot 15 times. Merrimack had 11 corner kicks, including eight in the second half, to just two for UNH.
James Hilaire made five saves for UNH, including four to help preserve a scoreless first half. Kevin Gargan made his first appearance of the season in goal, playing the final 10 minutes for UNH with one save.
