(08-24-06) - The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped its 2006 season opener to Lock Haven University on Thursday afternoon, 3-0, in the third game of a triple header with the UNH women's program at Robert B. Dodds Stadium.
UNH (0-1-0) had some nice chances in the game, including one ball that was struck by John Nolan (San Antonio, Texas) that forced Bald Eagle goalkeeper Billy Trimble to make a diving stop at the 67:02 mark in the contest. James Hilaire (Stamford, Conn.), starting in his collegiate debut, made five saves in the game.
Lock Haven (1-0-0) took control 2-0 after scoring twice in the middle of the first half. Patrick Long converted on a direct free kick from about 20 yards out 18:37 into the period, putting the ball too high for UNH's Hilaire to reach.
Then, just 43 seconds later, Ashley Rosindale hit a shot from the right side that Hilaire dove and deflected back into the field of play. But UNH was unable to clear, and Lock Haven's Andrew Meehan put home the rebound for his first goal of the season.
That same combination connected with less than six minutes remaining in the contest when Meehan connected on a crossing pass, hitting the ball into the left post and getting a deflection into the goal.
The Chargers now look forward to a non-conference home match against Post University on Sunday at Dodds Stadium. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
