(09-22-09) WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's tennis team defeated St. Joseph College 8-1 Tuesday afternoon in the team's 2009-10 season opener. The Blue Jays fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
The Chargers tallied eight wins Tuesday, including wins in first singles and first doubles. Freshman Lauren Lyons won her first collegiate match-up in a 6-0, 6-2 victory in first singles. She teamed with Kristina Bensley for an 8-3 victory in first doubles as well.
Noelle Polhemus grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in third singles and teamed with Mariana Zahora for an 8-3 in third doubles as well. Leah Smith and Christina Oiler each tallied wins in singles, 6-4, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively. The two teamed up in doubles for the Chargers' 8-6 victory in second doubles. Freshman Catherine Celotto registered New Haven's eighth point with a 6-4, 4-6 (10-8) tiebreak victory in sixth singles.
The Charger women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, September 25 when they host Adelphi University at Amity High School. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
