(09-21-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - University of New Haven alumna and City of West Haven Major John Picard '87 joined UNH on Saturday as the Chargers welcome football back to campus for the first time since 2003. Picard was on-hand to take part in West Haven Community Day, including a West Haven Pizza Challenge, and took part in the coin toss prior to the game.
Seven local businesses took part in the West Haven Pizza Challenge prior to Saturday's game. Michelangelo's was crowned the winner of the pizza challenge, while Casa Bianca, Full Circle, Domenic's, Bella Villa, Reno's and UNH's Own all supplied great competition.
Local children also enjoyed a bounce house and inflatable sports challenge during pregame activities at New Haven's North Campus.
Over 2,000 fans were on site for the Chargers' 2009 home opener against Bentley University. The Chargers take on Stonehill College on Saturday, September 26 for homecoming and the official dedication of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium.
West Haven Community Day was part of the UNH Department of Athletics broader community engagement efforts, which seeks to help the surrounding towns and community organizations while providing opportunities for student-athletes and coaches to give back to their communities.
