(09-09-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the Queens College Knights in straight sets Wednesday evening (25-13, 25-11, 25-10) at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-2.
The Chargers took immediate control of Wednesday's match, scoring 10 of the first 12 points. They then cruised with scoring runs of two and three to take the opening set 25-13. Keidy Candelaria led the way for the Chargers in the opening set, totaling five kills on six attempts (.833 hitting percentage). Sophomore Chelsey Alpough handed out 11 assists in the set.
In the second set, Queens' scored the opening point and went point-for-point with the Chargers until the 5-5 mark. New Haven then rattled off four unanswered points behind two kills from Sara Malmlov. A kill by Candelaria three points later gave the Chargers a 12-7 lead. New Haven then went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-7 lead late in the match. UNH concluded by scoring six of the final 11 points, including two service aces by Candelaria for points 23 and 24.
The third set was all New Haven Wednesday. The Chargers scored the first four points and held the Knights to just 10 points. Malmlov tallied three services aces, while Alpough and Heather Ladao each added one as well. Janeeka Benson led the attack with four kills on six attempts (.667 hitting percentage).
On the night, Candelaria led the Chargers with eight kills. Alpough, Malmlov and sophomore Elizabeth Akinbiyi each added six kills. Alpough dished out 24 assists, while Malmlov led the UNH back row with eight digs.
The Chargers hit at a .412 stroke in the match and held a 34-13 advantage in kills. They also totaled 12 services aces.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, September 12 when they travel to the Bentley Invitational, which will be hosted at UMass Lowell. UNH takes on Bridgeport and Georgian Court on Saturday and concludes the tournament against Rollins on Sunday.
