(06-04-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team was ranked seventh in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)/Under Armour poll. The Chargers seventh place ranking is the best in a final poll in the program's history after finishing the season with a 16-4 record.
Adelphi University ranked first in the poll after going 18-0 and capturing the NCAA Division II title.
New Haven's 16 wins in 2009 were the most in the program's history. The Chargers recorded three wins against nationally ranked opponents and ended Stonehill College's nine-year winning streak in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) en route to capturing the conference title.
NE-10 Coach of the Year Jen Fallon guided New Haven to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in the program's history where the Chargers fell to No. 2 C.W. Post.
Senior Mallory Ferrandiz became the first-ever IWLCA All-American First Team selection this season after leading the team in draw controls (59), caused turnovers (44) and game-winning goals (5). Sophomore Ashley Ferrandiz, the team leader in points (97), goals (57), assists (40) and ground balls (64), also earned national recognition as she was named to the IWLCA All-American Second team.
