(05-10-09) BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team fell 5-3 Sunday afternoon to the Georgian Court University in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship East-2 Regional Championship round. The loss concludes the Chargers season, with their second regional championship appearance in as many years.
New Haven fell down after one inning on Sunday at the C.W. Post Softball Complex. The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off a two-run homerun went over the right field fence.
Georgian Court added one with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning and another two off a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Chargers then gradually started narrowing down the Lions lead over the next three innings. Jordanna Borska came into the game and started the Chargers' rally by driving in the Chargers first run in the top of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Samantha Minervini drove in the Chargers' third run off a single to right field. The Chargers final run came in the top of the seventh inning off a Nicole Downs triple down the left field line.
Pitcher Breanne Gleason and Borska each had two hits for the Chargers in the loss. Gleason suffered the loss for the Chargers in the circle and concluded an outstanding junior campaign with a 31-16 record.
The Chargers conclude the season with a 34-18 overall record, the program's most wins since 1995 when the Chargers went 40-10-1. The only other team to tally more than 34 wins in a season was the '91 team that totaled 36 wins. This is the second-straight season the Chargers appeared in the regional championship round and their four NCAA appearance in the last six years.
